Default so if i want to change my exhaust tips I need to change my muffler?

I'm really sick of the stock exhaust tips on my NB. I figured with mine being a diesel if I got tips that went straight out instead of down that may cut down on some of the diesel soot on my rear bumper. So does that require that I get a new muffler to change the tips??? And what kind of muffler would be best? And what's the cost I'm looking at for something like that??? (I know, I'm always full of questions! lol)

VW sells tips that screw right over the other ones and doesn't require you to get a whole new muffler, if that's what you're interested in: http://www.cmgestore.com/vw08/SKUDet...8F1C71910U.ASP

I don't think I can use that, it says "all motors except TDI". I don't know why it would make a difference though...

Knowing VW, there's probably some difference that no one would notice right off the bat.

I know magnaflow sells tips, but I believe that they are weld on rather than bolt on. And they have a bunch of different designs.

I had my muffler cut off and just ran a straight pipe out with the tip I wanted on it.Legal in Tx. with a TDI.It sounds great and does keep the soot down.

Use bio and you won't get as much soot

Yes, VW engineers are more experienced with aerodynamics than "shadetree" thinkers.

I'm just letting people know what my experience is with running it straight out the back with just a tip sticking out about 1-2 inches.Cost will always figure in when a manufacturer builds a car.If everything they did was done "the best way" there would not be a market for aftermarket parts to improve on the cars we buy.

The "improvement" obtained from aftermarket parts is 98% psychological. Cars these days--especially German cars--are about as good as they're going to get right off the showroom floor. Nice of the aftermarket to provide this comforting service, however.

Well the new tips aren't only to help reduce soot (which sounds like it doesn't do). I kind of also want to upgrade the look and I know that exhaust tips can give it a really nice look. But I'm assuming, for better "diesel sound" and performance my best bet would be a whole new exhaust system included with tips.

Yeah tips don't really have anything to do with the soot. My 83 mercedes still runs a stock system, and I still call it my James Bond smoke screen when I stand on the gas. The tips are only going to direct where it goes.

On a side note, I ran the tips that VW sells on Elwood before I switched to the Magnaflow cat back. They're really nice for the money and hold up really well. Except for the ones I had didn't have drain holes drilled in them like they do now. So water would sit there and it rotted out the inside part of the tips.
