Compared to your picture mine do look like they are in wrong. I do have the shutters on the bottom. I will take another picture against a wall tonight.

Yes, they look like they're installed correctly. If you haven't been flashed at all I would say you're good to go

Try to get a pic of the lights on the wall but with your car 25ft away from the wall, to see how it looks.

Looks good Howie...the other pic just didn't look right. Looks like they could use a little fine tuning on the aim. How do you like them so far? Better than the kit that you had? Or did you never have one? I can't remember.

How did the wiring go? Did you put a fuse inline between the battery and the relay?

Nope, I didn't have the kit. From what you and someone else was saying I decided to try to do it right for once.

I haven't actually been out at night lately, but the short drive I did take nobody flashed me, so I guess the aim is ok. What do you see that is wrong?

I wired the ballasts directly to power with no fuses or relay. Am I bad? The stock plug goes into the headlight as before, and the original wires that went to the halogen bulb exit to the ballast, then back into the new bulb.

Thanks for that!

BTW, these lights are awesome; so much more light at night. They'll be great on the trip to Roswell next week.

I will update in a day or two. You guys really should be using a relay harness to pull power directly from the battery to save your stock wiring and switch. I believe I posted some info on this earlier in this thread.

Again, I will try and help you guys out with that in the next few days.

This is the quick and dirty info, let me know what doesn't make sense and I will fill in the blanks.

Note the black painted portions on the bulbs. What Hella projectors did you get? Can I see? Again...you're probably going to have to get creative with mounting since they won't just drop in like the Bosch projectors. I think you may be in for more frustration again by trying to do things cheaply. I recommended the parts I did for a reason.

Lots of good info to be had here regarding harness building (you'll have to register to view):
HiDPlanet.com :: Log in

I bought all my harness supplies from Parts-Express.com - Speakers, Speaker Building, Home Audio and Video, Pro Audio, Electronic Parts & Accessories including relay sockets and relays and fuse holders. Having a spare relay or two wouldnt be a bad idea since they do sometimes fail. That is the purpose of having a socketed relay.

Wiring wise...your goal is something like this:

The difference of course is the connector, since VW has a unique connector that you want to keep intact and in place so that your high beams will still work. What I did was this, leave the stock wiring intact. They plug into the headlight housing like normal. On one of your headlights, connect short lengths of wire to the low beam wires inside the headlight (be sure to carefully wrap/insulate the hot wire to ensure that no shorts will occur) and pass them through the back of the housing. Terminate the ends with a connector(s) of your choice to plug the harness into. This is the "9006" end of the above graphic.

On the side that you don't tap into, just carefully wrap/insulate those loose wires that used to go to the headlight bulb.

Clear as mud?

I'm just wondering, this is slightly off, but can you guys take a picture of the headlight cluster from the outside of the car? I'm curious to see how the finished product looks.

Thanks!

Mine looks the same as before. I guess if the retrofit is done correctly the new projectors line up and look stock.

bump for update again!

I bought the ddmtuning hid kit that crazymofo recommended. I got the ones under the slim ballast ones.

Do you know if the regular ballasts will fit in the space behind the headlights in that little fender hole on page 1 or 2?

my first hid kit was just a regular ballast and it didn't fit in the cubbies I had to mount them elsewhere... slim ballasts have been the only ones that have fit so far, but your ballasts may be different who knows...

I'll take some pics of my alternate ballast mounting location. No clunking ballasts and with my rigid Koni yellow + AP spring setup on battle-torn winter roads here in Ontario they have not moved an inch! It was a PITA to mount them though (thx Turbo-Christ0)

@ canned3ggs: Can I meet you somewhere to take a look at your HID setup? I am not far from Pac Mall.

Thanks for answering my questions!! Pictures of everyone's ballast mounting would be great.

I hope i won't have regrets on not spending an extra $10 for the slim ballasts...
