WOW!
That looks great! How do you do this? I want to do something like this in my car.
How do you remove the headliner? How do you get the fabric to stay on?
Sorry for all the questions. Not many people with my car have done this yet, and I'm trying to figure out how to do it
Thanks for any help you can give me ...

lol I had all the same questions. :P
but basically you unscrew the handles and sunglasses holder, the visors, pop out the lights - basically everything on the roof...
and PULL the mirror off... pop the plastic pillars away from the headliner... pull it out and you have to get ALLL the old foam off.. and use some really good headliner spray adhesive [ i got mine from auto zone.. $14.99 ] spray the headliner itself and your new fabric and basically make it really smooth and start on the bottom in the middle work your way up and out and leave enough on the outside to glue around on the other side. any holes you have cut an X in and glue around the other side too. let it dry and pop it all back in :]

if it sounds confusing i'm sorry just ask lol i just got off work :P

and if you have a sunroof....
OMG.

ask ray.

how did you get the compartment out? there are two screws. but they seem to be behind that rubber tray inside. it will not pull out.do both the black back piece and grey piece come out? i'm thinking of molding this area in. but i would like to remove without breaking it.

Are you talking about the sunglasses holder in front of the mirror for cars w/o the sunroof? If you are, the tray does just slide out, just pull straight out firmly. I should know, I put a tv in there.

thanks <3 it was actually pajama fabric :P its argyle with pink, black and tan in it
and the sunglasses holder - when you open it on each side you open the lil tabs and unscrew the two screws then it just comes out. same with the oh snap handle on the passenger side

yeah i saw headliner material at the fabric store but my boyfriend and i both decided that none of them would have worked for me because i'm just not a plain kind of girl :] so this fabric was with all the flannel and stuff and im pretty sure the tag said "for childrens' pajamas and sleepwear only" or something...

and this part of the interior... ummmm take a picture and show me or something because i still have no idea which part it is, and i'd love to help just please dont break your beetle :[

i got it yesterday. pulled out just like you said. i used some scrap aluminum siding i have laying around to mold that hole closed. i will probably be drilling out two holes where i blocked it for gauges. i figure it'll give it a clean look and take away something i don't use anyways. i'll post some pics of how i do it,incase somebody else wants to do something like it. i will also be doing a raised graphic of the new beetle logo.

heres a pic of what i did so far. incase anybody doesn't have the drill with wire wheel attachement like smartchick. i used a wire brush and it worked pretty good. going to use spray foam to fill in the side handles. don't feel i need them. i used paper to outline this opening as best as i could. then cut the piece out of scrap aluminum siding. easily bendable to the shape. but very strong in this shape. i then used an angle grinding to make it perfect fit. Hot glued it from the back and top and grind it smooth. fiberglass would have been the way to go. but its going to be under fabric. y work so hard?
