Default My interior painting woes...

So I was all jazzed up to get some mods done on my 2000 NB!!! I have primer, I have paint, I have 3 different grits of sand paper, I have rubbing alcohol, I have a vision...

What came out is less than stellar:

I used alcohol to get the rubber gunk off
It all came off and I used a flat blade to scrape it all off
I washed it down
I sanded...
I sanded more...
Did I mention I sanded?

Then I put on 2 coats of primer..
I sanded
I put on another coat of primer...
I let it dry...
I added my first coat of paint....
Let it dry over night
...woke up..looked AWESOME!!!!!
added another coat and got this(Picture 1)

So I stripped and sanded all the parts yet again
did I mention I sanded?

Then I re-primered (3 coats)
then re-painted 3 coats
THen I added 2 coats of clear
Then I got this...(picture 2)

What the heck am I doing wrong?!?!?

It scares me to mod anymore!!!

I still have to do the headliner and it is starting to freak me out since this has gone off so badly....

Advice?!?!?!

You're trying too hard and putting too much on. With most rattle can paint, you need to put on successive light coats within a certain time frame. Anything beyond that and you have to wait for it to fully cure.

I suspect that the multiple layers did not fully cure before you painted over it again. Also, what kind of paints/primer are you using?

When I did my gauge pod, 4 quick light coats (5 minutes apart I think)...let it cure for 24 hours and I installed it.

Personally, I would just sand it down so there is a decent "key" to the surface, then just a few light coats until you get good coverage and call it good. As long as you are using good paint that is meant for plastic, you shouldn't need to prime it. Let it cure fully before putting clear on if that is what you are going for. Personally I prefer the "matte" black look. Krylon Fuzion Indoor/Outdoor Flat Black is a perfect match to the factory dash paint.

did you use adhesion promoter..??? if not you needed to...

me I would sand it all back down, hit it with some adhesion promoter and start over using light coats to build up full coverage then stop like DZLBUG said... same thing with the clear, light coats to build full coverage then stop...

one last thing, good prep is key when painting... make sure your stuff is really clean...

I used primer then paint. I sanded the prep to the bare plastic (got all of the factory gunk off)

What kind of adhesion promoter do you use?

you could send them to me and I could do them for you, they would come out looking like butter.... of course I would only charge a small "modding" fee...

Did you have to take off the pillars to get the headliner out? How do they come off?

You have to take them out ... you unbolt the grab strap and the seatbelt mount and they just pull off you have to pull them toward the rear.. they are held on by a couple of clips..
