Default GPS Mount

So I posted this here (Beetlegirl1234...2010 Final Edition Blue/White) but I decided to make a new post just for the GPS mount in case someone is interested in getting one for themselves.

Here is the proclip mount.
Volkswagen Beetle - 1998-2012 - ProClip Angled Mount*-*ProClip Car Mounts for Mobile Phones, GPS, and Handheld Devices

Here is the site where I got the device specific holder. They have holders for various GPS and smartphones (including the iPhone)
Semsons & Co. Inc.

Total cost for the final product, $35. Not bad for a "custom" gps holder.

Here are the parts. 1 part is the generic mount for the new beetle (from ProClip). The other is a device specific holder (Tom Tom) with double sided tape.

Here is the before picture. This is where the generic mount is going to go.

Mounting the ProClip was super easy. Just slide the plastic tabs behind the bar to expose a small gap.

Then push the ProClip mount until you hear it click and pull the tabs out.

Peel off the double sided tape and press the GPS holder into the ProClip mount.

Attach the GPS (Tom Tom)

All done. Went for a quick test drive. GPS can be easily seen and accessed from the driver seat. It also sits low enough to clear the airbag as well.

Cool write-up and very clean install , how were you able to do this for $35? I see the Proclip part but can't find your Semsons 'device holder'...

BTW do you have a daytime shot looking at the interior 3 ft away, how far does your GPS go inside the cabin, knee clearance? is the mount holding up pretty good?

TIA

My wife is out of town with the beetle so I am unable to take day time pictures. However, unless your knees somehow come up to the grab bar as right I don't see how you would come close to the GPS. It is pretty much in line with the bar.

For $35? Easy.

ProClip Angled Mount is $30 (from my link on the first post)
The second part was this. EPCHGSM: Adhesive Dash Mount for TomTom One 125/130/130*S/140/140*S; XL 330/330*S/340/340*S, XXL 530/540 - TomTom One 125/130/130*S/140; XL 330/330*S/340, XXL 530*S, 540*S Mount
It looks like they raised their prices. When I bought it was $4.99. Now it is $6.99. Still a good price.

However, I have since changed the second mount to this.
Amazon.com: ARKON APTTEP-VSM Vehicle Specific Mount Adapter Plate Connects 4 Hole AMPS VSM to TomTom EasyPort Pattern: Electronics
Same price, but it screws into the Angled Mount verses just using double sided tape. I found that the tape would get weak and the GPS would fall when it was hot.

Yeah... sorry I didn't dig deep enough to find your Tom Tom mount, but yes that's pretty good pricing. And good to know about your 'screw in' strategy. I'm hoping to get a 4.3 or 5" GPS, so i expect it'll intrude into the knee area a little and come close to the radio side... not sure how big your Tom Tom is.

Homer3D... thanks again

In your opinion is GPS usable with the top down and all that glare?

I'm also looking at the Tom Tom 335 series, do you have any thoughts on the 335? It comes with mounting disc could be perfect for the top center dash. GPS suctions to said disc. It gonna be kinda dorky to have that sit on dash center stage though.

That is something Stephanie will have to answer. She drives it. I am just the passenger.

I have the lowest model Tom Tom that has text to speech so I am sure a higher model one would be better.
