Angry I screwed up, advice?

So I saw all the amazing do it yourself jobs everyone has on this site and tried some. I sanded then painted my steering wheel spokes and the inside door handles.. And they came out horrible. Not only that I bought paint that ate the plastic.. thanks to some bad advice.

I have been looking and searching for replacement parts because currently my baby has no door handles (the covering, the part that peels) and no steering wheel spokes.. Does anyone have spare ones? I would be more than willing to buy them off of you in probably any condition!

The hardest part about painting interior pieces is that they usually have had armor all or similar put on them before. It is THE hardest thing to fully remove to prep for paint. If there is ANY residual on the part, get ready to repaint. As far as eating the plastic.....what kind/brand did you use? Sorry for the issues and hope you find the parts you need.

Oh I sanded the crap out of them in my grandfathers garage. They were looking pretty great.. until what I had them drying on fell over.. :-( I was standing right in front of it showing my father and flop it went.. I can list what it was tomorrow because I left the paint in the garage.

Its been a few since I posted on this fourm but I am all for helping out you old friends. First dont bother worrying about finding spare or buying new pieces. All is not lost. Your car is still compleatly runnable with that stuff off. Go buy sandpaper(depending on how badly the paint ate the plastic 80grit up to 1000grit) its alway nice to have extra sandpaper laying around for DIY projects. Sand down the plastic starting with coarse grit working your way up to finer grit, paying attention to not round the crisp edges, till all is smooth again. Now start over. Make a painting area that holds each part securely or hang them by strings. Right befor you start painting again wipe down the parts with rubbing alcohol(very important all is clean) I usually stick with Duplicolor paints for anything automotive. I am hopeing people will chime in here for what is the perfect paint for interior. REMEBER LIGHT COATS!!! That is the hardest thing to do for a beginer (speeking from experience LOL). Usually the standard process for paint coats are 1 coat of primer, 2-3 coats of color, and 1-2 coats of clear coat, but you can get away with just a couple coats of color and not go for the perfect gloss finish which is a little easyer, light sanding inbetween coats. . Now I am hopeing other people with chime in with more advice but just remember nothing is unfixable.

I actually cant sand them because when they fell over (because of how much the paint ate the plastic) they bent out of shape and the handles have holes in them now. :-/

Wow, what kind of paint did you use and who advised u to use it? There are a lot of DIY's here that even show or mention the correct type of paint.

Hope you find the parts soon and cheap

Wow, the paint ate the plastic? Now I stupidly left some interior trim in acetone over night and it ate them, but that was my own dumb fault. It happens, and it sucks I hope you find what you need. THankfully my steering wheel spokes are good and my car is silver, so I"m going to leave them alone. Don't give up on DIY stuff!!! This isn't typical when painting...

Put up a WTB add and keep on bumping until you find it, also search the for sale section for cars that are being parted out. There have been a couple in the past months.

Good luck

Sorry that happened to you. I thought I steered you incorrectly. I was the one that told you how to get the spokes off on my painting dilemma thread. I hope you find your parts.

What type of paint did you use? My guess is that it was a lacquer. That would be the only type of paint that I would think could eat plastic. Let us know so it doesn't happen to someone else.

I'm curious as to what type of paint is caustic enough to "EAT" holes through the plastic pieces. I'm wondering if it ate through the plastic what kind of protective clothing were you wearing? A radiation suit perhaps...............
