All you need is a hair dryer and a warm day. Warm it up and use your thumb nail - it should peel right off. If gummy stuff gets left behind, you can use WD-40 on it - let it sit for 2 minutes then use your thumbnail to scrape off. Then washw ith soap and water! Viola! Compliments of my hubby!

get them warm with a hair dryer, not hot but very warm
then use these
plastic razor blades
Amazon.com: 25pc Plastic Razor Blades Non-Scratch Scraping: Home Improvement

pull at 90deg to the car

any leftover sticky mess use a small amount of kerosene (yes i did suggest kerosene) on a rag and rub it out.

BTW for those that are now freaking out getting ready to blast me for suggesting kerosene for removal of sticky stuff from a car, look at most of the major brands polishes and waxes out there they contain kerosene. Also it is great for removing road tar too.

X2 on the hair dryer, Kerosene or gasoline won't damage the paint at all. WD40 also works wonders as suggested above, I've used it tons of times.

I just did this.

I asked for advice but ultimately didn't want to risk the heat of the hair dryer. I just waited for a warm sunny day and let the bug sit out for a while. Then I just peeled the stickers off gently.

The residue came off with just water. If not, I would have done what the VW service manager recommended - hand sanitizer for the residue.
