Arrow Upgrade Your Front & Rear VW Badges!

I thought this might be of interest to many Orgers who have '02 - '05 NBs and NBCs with the ****, flat, polished alumnium and black, front and rear badging. Needing to do something with mine, and not particularly liking the Euro Blue & White (also heard these do not stand up to time well),

All I have seen around the Org is speculation as to parts on eBay and elsewhere that might fit, etc. Could not find any thread with a definative answer.

I have done some research. It seems VW (at some point in time) also felt the need to produce a better part. These are (or are like) what everyone refers to as the 3d badges used on the 2nd Gen body style.

Here's the information:

For the Brilliant Chrome & Dolomite Grey (that's what they are called) upgraded parts, the correct part numbers are:

(These may, in fact, BE, the nicer badges used on the 2nd Gen body style; I'll have to check on that, as those are regularly on eBay, but probably not any cheaper than South Bay VW)

Front Hood Emblem
p/n 1C0 853 617 A WV9, 1C0 853 617 B ULM

$26.60
South Bay Volkswagen

$37.60
Genuine VW / Audi EMBLEM (1C0-853-630-K-WV9 / 1C0853630KWV9) (A cheap source for OEM parts, but not these)

Rear Trunk Emblem (non-swivel/no key cylinder)
p/n 1C0 853 630 K WV9

$26.60
South Bay Volkswagen

$37.60
World Impex, Inc. - Search Results (A cheap source for OEM parts, but not these)

Note: My parts guide has some conflicting info, or at least confusing info, but these are shown as the correct p/n for production from 09/01 (2002 MY all inclusive) thru 07/05 (2005 MY all inclusive). South Bay VW will verify correct p/n to your VIN (have it ready). Can't speak for the other.

I will do some research on the swivels, but if your's is, and falls in these production dates, then the badge probably swaps out on top of the swiveling cover plate.

If you read this, and find it helpful, why not post a comment so that it stays up on the boards for all to see, as otherwise it just gets buried, until someone does a search, seems to not be a common practice (I'm as guilty as anyone), and even then, without a post it stays that way.

Hope this helps someone.

Your south bay links don't go to the part# you are stating.

Also - I have had both and found both to wear out over time...2002 up and the euro. So, to each their own. I want one that is milled out of stainless or aluminum.

Sorry, some copied links take you back to the page, others default to an earlier page in the system, no control, but a part number search will take you to the part.

Yes, that's what I stated in my post. These are not the OE. These are an upgraded 3d chrome plated version, not the relatively flat, polished mill finish aluminum that came on the car. Those part numbers are the first part of these part numbers, i.e. 1C0 853 617 A, the WV9 is added to designate the Brilliant Chrome/Dolomite Grey version. Chrome plating may not be polished stainless steel, but it's far more durable than any finish on aluminum, polished, anodized, or bright dipped.

hey Roger , how you been buddy?
I replaced the front badge on my car, now i need to do the rear.
its a 2003 NB Convertible. the bottom triangle swings to the side and theres a hidden key hole there. I cant find this replacement badge anywhere. the dealer says I have to buy the whole lock and latch assembly, cant buy just the badge. i think they are mistaken. any direction you could point me in??

I think these look like the ones on my '00 bug. If I am correct, then they do not last well, the "chrome" on mine has currently started flaking. All I will have soon is the yellowish fiberglass underneath. Although, it IS 11 years old...

Will try to post up a pic tomorrow evening.

Bret! How the hell are you Buddy? Me, I'm still waiting for a set of Homelink Vert Visors, a Vert Autodim Mirror, and a fricking Red Boot to cross my path! Been going to drop you a note, but you know how that goes! Sorry. Hope things are a little brighter for you than around the holidays! Thought about you just the other day. Picked up a job in NorCal (San Jose), but way too far north to swing by and say high! Headed that way in about a month.

Anyway, you're the second who has brought this up about the swivel lock cover/badge. I am 99.9% sure I have the information somewhere about not having to replace the entire assembly, or even the swivel cover, just the badge. I keep forgetting to hunt for that in my spare (yeah, right) time. But I will, drop me an email so I can keep the subject active if you get a chance. Let's talk soon!

Please do, but I think they may be more "like" your '00 badges in appearance, than the later ones, like Bret's '03, Tico4Life's '04, or my'02 and '05, that are nearly two dimensional with the VW logo raised very little, done with a piece of stamped aluminum, with the VW logo polished up a little and the background painted black. It is my understanding these are an upgraded version (to replace both yours and ours), available through the dealer, I assumed on a casting, that was chrome plated with the background painted dolomite gray. However, even chrome on plastic, that ultimately peels, will be an improvement over the POSs I have. And the sources I have found are pretty cheap...

Early on, I was considering swapping mine for the blue Euros, which appear to be a higher quality, almost look powdercoated, but I was told by several ppl they don't hold up either. Which was really okay by me because I wasn't crazy about the idea of blue/white badges on my Dark Flint Gray and Garnet Red Top NBC. Even thinking about having the dolomite grey background redone in Garnet Red to match my ragtop or Bordeaux Red to match my interior, since the top spends so much time dropped.

Now that you tell me yours are plastic I'm not sure about these parts, going to go back and check the part numbers from the original versions on the early models. I'll have a look and try to post up what I find. Maybe I just need to order the "new and improved" and have a look see at the real item.

HOLY CRAP!

Digging deeper, I find multiple parts diagrams for the same model/year with different information, resellers identifying non swivel badges as swivel badges, pictures of the wrong item, parts diagrams for parts that were not used in those years, etc, etc. Why can't companies publish the right information or not at all.

Based on what 58and03Beetles posted, I really dug around for the '03 Vert Rear and find two situations, his, and it is shown as a complete assembly only and p/n 1Y0 853 630 WV9 (01/03-11/03), South Bay has them for $85.39, which were then superceded on the '04 NBC by p/n 1C0 853 630 K WV9 (12/03-07/05), South Bay has them for $26.60

Not posting another thing about these fricking badges until I have some more reliable information.

Can any tell me how to remove the front emblem on my 2004 NBC. I have a new one to put on.

I also have a new rear emblem w/o the key hole. My beetle must be an early 2004 because it has the keyhole. Does anyone know if this one will go on. I never use the key to open the trunk.
