Default A weekend full of Styling Modifications . . . . BEWARE THE COLOR PINK AHEAD

Okay, so it was more like a weekend plus 3 days

I am posting the finished and almost finished mods. If anyone is interested in seeing the step by step photos, let me know but they are a tad bit boring.

Here goes. . . .

The pink Angry eyelids

The Emblem inserts (front and rear are done)

Door handle guards. I originally wanted to cover them with vinyl but I didn't like the way it turned out. So I was lucky to have found some spray paint that matched all the pink vinyl mods.

Interior door panels (upper black part)
These were a little pain in the tookus but it worked out with the Matte black Duplicolor. Ummm I don't know if you can tell the difference but I posted a photo a while ago where it showed a hole in the rubber coating and now it's not there. Anyway! Here they are.

If you look closely there is a litte black on the tan part because we are we todd did and didn't put enough tape. No biggie, we hope to do the whole door black someday . . .

We also did a purple light up bud vase but I forgot to get a picture of that. . . stay tuned to this thread for that photo.

And last but not least, we also did the side bar things and the Guage Surround.

Here are the side things done

This photo should look familiar . .

I will hopefully post the finished photo soon.

I hope everyone enjoyed seeing my latest mods. Yes I know I started with just the interior door handles but then I had the ball rolling and rolled it!! BTW there will be more pink . . . . yes there will be more

Damn, girl. This is lookin' really good! Kudos to you and your hard work. And, most importantly, how the hell did you repair the black part of your upper door?

Hi Sarah!

I purchased my handle guards online at I think was TWA? Or is it TVA? It's on the NB list.

This was the best way in my opinion since you can't soak the whole top part of the door trim.

After the door removal (duh)
I sat at our kitchen table with a bowl filled with nail polish remover. I first had the idea of using a sponge but that did not work to well. I dampened one side of the sponge almost to soaked point but not to where it would run it I set it down on to the trim. I sat the sponge on one end and let it sit for about 50-60 seconds. When I lifted the sponge, I got the melted bubbling effect.

As seen here

And then you peel with a credit card or your fingers.

Okay, so the whole sponge process was dragging and I change it over to these cotton face wipey things. You can get them in the cosmetic department of your local Wally World. They are flat and you can tear the size you want. This worked GREAT!! Because when you soaked the wipey things you could mold it to the panel. Even right on the hard to reach edges.
As seen here (don't mind the mess, I got a little carried away )

Alright! That is how I stripped the rubber gunk off with NO SANDING what so ever!! It came off CLEAN.

As for the painting, I think we all know how to do that now.
If not, please see FineExampl's thread on painting

I'm amazed that this process worked. I totally did NOT have this same effect myself. I wish to goodness i did. This is what i was hoping to achieve. I wonder if processes have changed over the years.

Weird...

Hmmm. Also, you have a 99. I wonder if yours was weakened over time? Mine's an 02 and only now has begun to deteriorate with peeling, etc. Very odd.

I had only one hole (that didn't sound right ) where the stuff was peeling. I wouldn't doubt that VW would have added extra layers to the newer Beetles.

ALSO! The side bar thingys were the same. After about a minute in the nail polish remover, the rubber bubbled and I pulled it off.

The process used to make the car parts. Like, they may have improved in later models.

Very cool. I just really hate the fact that I will have to endure so much damn nail polish remover. That stuff makes me sneeze like crazy. And I'm pretty sure it's killed a few of my last remaining brain cells.
