Default How do I get the suround around the Auto shifter off??

Hi,
I want to get the plastic plate part which has the holes cut out for the Auto shift.
Has anyone done it, and can you tell me how?

I've managed to get the console up from around it, but can't work out how to get that plate thingy off?
I don't want to break anyhting.

Cheers

On the shifter column, push down on the sleeve under the handle until the button goes in. Than pull straight up on the knob and it'll come off. Than just slide whatever you want to off.

Hi,
Yes, I know how to get the handle off, but I want to get the plastic part with the holes for DRPN32 etc off.
I want to paint it. I've seen you can get chrome overlay ones, but unfortunately they don't make them for right hand drive.

I have got the console as a whole loosened, but couldn't work out how to get the shifter base thing with the holes in it off - gee I hope I'm making some sense???

That just pops right out. It's only held in with clips. Even the letters and numbers themselves are removable.

O.K, With a lot of wrenching and bending and force, I finally got the damn thing off.
Just gave it it's first coat of paint.
Not looking forward to getting it back on without scratching all my hard work at the end of the week.

I'll be posting pics of my ride, next week.

Got a car show comming up this weekend - don't want to give too much away before the big unveiling

Thanks for your replies - I really appreciate it

Yes, I saw a few people had the boot instead. I however, being a blonde (but most of the time quite smart) NEED to be able to see what gear I shift into, or else I will reverse instead of going in drive!

I have to admit, although quite embarrasingly, when I Bought my beetle, I drove it for about a week before I worked out why the speedo display said PRND321 - yeah, shook my head at my own stupidity for about 5 hours!!

Thanks for the info.
I've worked out why your instructions were difficult for me now that you have posted the pics.
My console is different to the one in your pic. I had to undo the console as mine is kind of embeded under the plastic console surround, and it definately didn't just pull/pop out!
It was a nightmare.
Then once you have it loose, it is a little wider than the console surround that fits over the top, so you kind of have to wrangle it off.
I'll post pics when it's done.
I've painted a lot of my interior, and this piece is the WORST for getting that plastic crap off. I've painted it 3 times tonight, and the paint just keeps on wrinkling cause I haven't got al the plastic/rubber crap off.
Bit over it cause it is now 1.30am and I'm TIRED........

Thanks for the info.
