ok - sorry it took so long, i kinda forgot about this thread.

anyways - so far ive had 3 different paint sessions.

first came the 3 drivers side trim pieces and the 2 passenger handle sides:

then, since my handles were all flaking and scratched up (that stupid rubber-paint stuff), i painted them:

and the last one was the aftermarket radio surround, and the bud vase:

i'm goin with a white-with-silver-parts color scheme. i love the way the white contrasts with the black, but white on grey isnt as nice (liveable, but not preferable).

as you can see in the door handle pics, the top of the door panels that were covered in the rubber-paint stuff are flaking really badly, and the center console (the one with the radio, not the one with the cupholders) is doing the same. i'm painting the 2 door panel tops and the center console (including the most forward piece) white over christmas break. i can do little paint jobs up here at school, but bigger things like those are definitely for doing at home.

points on removing the rubber-paint stuff:
i started out by scraping a little bit at a time, but scarabY2k said that any degreasing cleaner (like Greased Lightning) will take it of lickity split. i havent gotten to test that out yet, but others have and have said its the way to go.

and dont worry - ive since replaced that broken window switch.

EDIT:
sorry, i forgot this bit:

i also painted the shifter knob, and the plate-that-has-PRND321-on-it (for lack of a better name).

in taking the rubber-paint stuff off the plate-that-has-PRND321-on-it, i apparently soaked it in acetone for too long, and the plastic got deformed. (acetone takes the rubber off, but it eats the plastic too, so if you use it, do so sparingly.) so now i'm saving pennies for the chrome version.

plus that pic showed me how i dont like the white on grey as much.

Will Greased Lightning take any of that rubberized crap off? That will help me when i do my next painting project. So glad someone finally posted a way to remove it. Thank you.

again, scarbY2k said he got the idea from others who had tried it and it worked for him and them.

of course, again i haven't tried it myself, so we'll just wait for some other members to approve.

On your shifter...how'd you remove the leftside bit of plastic on the handle? I couldn't get mine off. In other words the little ring piece.
I'm also interested how you got the shiftplate off? It looks awesome painted. You appear to have had the same ideas i've been working on for my wheels. I'm liking the storm trooper look alot.

i didnt remove that side ring. i used what i like to call the strategic masking tape process. tape off the bumpy bit in the middle and the silver button and you're ready to go. i dont think that you can pull off the sides - i think its one tube that goes under the bumpy bit.

to remove the plate, first ill give you the advanced NB user version: yank it off.

here's the more concise version: once you have the knob off, sitck your finger between the plate and the little piece of rubber in the middle (that the knob sticks up through) and pull upwards. theres 4 little tabs slipped into the floor console that will just slide out when you pull up (they dont need released otherwise). reinstall is opposite removal.

i've posted how to remove the auto shift knob elsewhere on the org, put ill do it here to since it's relevant...

to remove the auto shift knob: start by putting on your e-brake. you dont want the tranny to accidentally slip in gear and roll once you have your knob off. first, pull down on the collar attached to the bottom of the knob itself (see photo). once that's detached, squeeze in on the button and pull straight up to detach the knob from the stick its attached to. it might take some pulling the first time, but it gets easier as you do it a few times. (mind hitting your hand on the center console, like i did the first time.) re-install is opposite removal.

and i was goin for stormtrooper look without actually saying "stormtrooper", because another org member beat me to the general idea (stormtrooper on old forum, oneighturbo on this one). didnt wanna be a copycat or anything.

YES, YES, YES. I can say from first person experience that greased lightning does the job. As a matter of fact, I will be taking off the last few trim pieces (flower vase holder, grab bar ends, and tranny shift plate) and put the 'ol greased lightning on them.

Another tip: A low abrasive scrunge pad will expedite matters greatly.

Please keep in mind that this stuff will break down what it comes in contact with. So if your're not removing your panels/pieces, please mask accordingly (tape/plastic sheeting)and have a towel to wipe any drool. It's not acid mind you, but to the rubbery stuff it is kryptonite.

Hey MOB987,

Great job on the derubberoctomy and the paint job. Glad to help bro. Props to "The Cheat" for the advice.

As I was looking at your paint scheme, I was wondering if anyone painted the door panels similar to yours, but doing it in that VANS checkered pattern. Just popped in me ol noggin. Again, props on the paint job.

I'm hoping to make it down that way (Brooksville) shortly after Thanksgiving. Maybe we can hook up; at least for a quick bite or something. You never know, a few more 'org-ers' might join in.

As for my paint scheme, I'm keeping it a secret until the reveal. DON'T SAY A WORD JAX BUG FOLKS!!! Keep it to yourself Des

heh - i'm afraid while you're in brooksville, i'll be 4 hours away up in tallahassee. im back up here monday after thanksgiving and not leavin again til december 16.

i wanted to put that i'm full-time at FSU in my profile, but the map went crazy when i did.

on another note, i'd never thought of checkerboard before, but it sounds pretty awesome. if i were to do the door panels checkerboard, i think i'd do everything else checkerboard too (speedo surround, center console, etc), just so the panels wouldnt look out of place. that said, i'll paint them all white to start with, and finish this scheme first, then if/when i get tired of it, ill go checkerboard. awesome idea tho!

and you had better hurry up with that reveal too!

you ought to stop here in Jacksonville, on your way back to Tally. FSU huh? You rock dude!

Allthough i'm a Nole fan, Penn State is my first love. Its been hard latley for me to fully support the Noles cause of Bowden.... I like him; don't misunderstand me. It's just that I think he's sticking around because if he retires, my beloved Joe Paterno will pass him up as the winningest coach and thats been sticking me in the craw. Still the Noles are my #1 Florida team. When you mentioned school and Polk County, I thought you were going to S. Florida. Fooled me you did

I wasn't throwing you a hint for doing the VANS scheme. It just came to mind. I still wonder if anyone has done something like that. Come to think of it, the door panels/stereo-dash surround makes for a great canvas for artistic creativity.

As for my paint scheme, I should be getting the paint and the....Oops almost said it...."other stuff" next week. I really need to get-ta-gettin on the paint before the temp gets too cold.

By the way, did you use a plastic paint or get a flex additive put in your paint?

EDIT: oh yeah, what JVC unit do you have. PM me on it (model#, where did you get it, specs, how does it sound) asap.

neither of the above. i used rustoleum's automotive primer, just cuz it sounded good, and dupli-color's "auto spray" color and clear coat. everything implied auto applications so i went for em. all are available at your local auto parts store or even *shudder* wal-mart.

one word to anyone and everyone who plans on or has painted interior parts:
polish them. unless you use like 6 coats of hard clear color, i recommend some kind of protective wax of polish. i hafta retouch a few things soon - not because i messed up on them, but theyre rubbing away from more-than-regular use (things like the door handles, and the part on the radio surround where the large knob hits when you eject a CD and the face flips down - that sort of thing). fowvay tried telling me to go back and polish them, but i negelected to do so. shouldve known better than not to listen to fowvay.

Wow I'm really impressed with what some of you have done with your interiors. I haven't done all that much to mine. I have performed a few mods though, mostly I'm trying to keep it pretty clean and simple. It goes with my overall concept of what Pomelo should be. You can follow the link in my sig to see the pics. I won't bother torturing the dial up users on the org by uploading them all in this thread.

ICE
  • Alpine CDA-9807 head unit.

COSMETIC MODS
  • Audi TT Dash vents

  • Euroswitch

  • working gauge cluster rear fog icon

  • Relocated flip switch for rear spoiler

  • Monster New Beetle Floor mats

  • Custom New Beetle Dead Pedal

  • Turbo S pedal Covers

  • Yellow Leather Shift boot from European Color Concept.

  • Disabled day time running lights

  • Color coded interior components (platinum gray door pulls, yellow gauge cluster etc).

  • Carbon fiber and chrome shift knob

  • Illuminated bud vase

  • Five silk daisies... so manly

Wilson's got:
black Katzkin leather seats
black and yellow Wheelskin steering wheel cover
yellow bud vase
TVA aluminum "sport" door pins
painted speedometer surround and grab bar ends
TVA embroidered floor mats
DIY painted black door handles
blue/white steering wheel emblem
and a cactus in the vase

I'd like to get a set of monster mats and Audi TT pedals as well. Maybe Santa will be good to me this year.

Gurrl, your pooch is freaking me out. Niiiiice doggie.

Another derubberoctomy note:

If your a bit more skilled at using Keytones, you can use Acetone to strip off the rubbery substance. I've used this too but it tends to evaporate quickly as keytones do.

PLEASE NOTE:
Do it in a well vented area I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!!!!

Use protective gloves

Be quick on the draw as you apply/scrub/wipe. As mentioned, Acetone evaporates fast. Not as fast as MEK, but it does evaporate.

Unless you know what you're working with and how to work it, I'd suggest removing the panels/parts from your beloved bug. Otherwise, Mask and protect anything you don't want to come in contact with the Acetone.

Don't get me wrong.....You should be fine with the Greased Lightning, Scotch Brite Scrunge pad and some elbow grease. I've tried the Acetone as well and does a superior job- KNOW WHAT CHA DOING THOUGH. The center console by the tranny shift area has a thicker amount of the rubber goop and the acetone worked quicker than the GL.

Hope this helps

When you remove the cluster you will see an additional couple of screws in the back. Undo those and the rear portion comes off.

There are two different ones: Autometer and Bernt. Autometer is cheaper but it sticks on top, while Bernt is more of higher quality and more stock looking, but is more expensive. It replaces the top dash piece completely.
