Are those european license plates legal to have or just for show?

I'm pretty sure you can have them as additional plate, but you can't use euro plates to replace US ones. In other words, yes they are for show only and in my opinion look retarded.

There must be ways to have legal Euro plates. For example, I currently have English plates on my Ford Contour because I shipped it from there. They're only legal on the car for 60 days until I get them stateside tags, however. I guess it would be a similar practice if I had shipped the car from Germany or something. Euro tags would look kind of funny on a strictly stateside car and would probably get unwanted attention from "the law".

In California it's illegal to have a Euro plate in the front, you have to have a registered one up there.

If cops will pull you over for not having a front plate at all, they sure as heck will pull you over for having a "fake" front plate.

As long as you don't run it as your regular plate you're cool. I see alot of people with older VWs with the wider plate spots run a German or similar euro plate with their US plate overtop which is perfectly legal cause I do that with my mercedes. And I imagine that up front would be the sameif you live in a 2 plate state.
