Thumbs down Rating System

I suggest we do away with the stars to rate threads. If you don't like the thread, you don't post anything on it and if you do like the thread, you post! Who needs stars?!

Personally I never look at the things but I have heard some of my good friends get bummed out by seeing they were "down-graded" one star. It's silly that people have to be so childish as to rate a thread one star when they just don't like someone or a mod someone has done.

I think it may spare some feelings if we do away with them. Anyone else?

Sorry, Niki, I couldn't resist.

But really I agree. I never look at them either, and the only times I rate a thread (other than just now ) is when someone mentioned it's been downgraded. My parents taught me that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. I wish all you jerks could learn that lesson. Oops, never mind.

Sing it, girl!

How will we raise up the good threads?

Post counts don't make a thread good.

I know some people can take things personally; but what are we supposed to do? Remove every "POSSIBLY negative" rating system?

It's getting as bad as those schools that don't let kids play tag cause "someone might get their feelings hurt".

At least in the thread ratings, every vote counts equally; unlike the school ground where some kids are just naturally faster than others.

I agree with you Ron, but if a good thread is a good thread, people will read it anyway. You can tell which are the good ones by the way they stick around over time.

Like I said, I personally don't ever really look at them, nor use them (unless, like Jacob, someone says it was down-rated). I think it's just a popularity contest that gets out of hand sometimes with people just rating one star for the heck of it.

Haha... kinda like the way this thread has 2 stars... You kids...

Ha ha Niki! I tried pm'ing the powers that be about this yesterday. I don't think people should be able to rate the 'picture' threads. Just like how we used to be able to rate the members photos.....yeah, I said USED to.

And psst...where's my freakin' new wheel pics?!

How did another star get in there? I guess because everyone else's ratings counted just as much as my 1 star.

Maybe, Niki, there are people that actually do look at the stars? If so, you really need to rate this thread higher, because it does make a lot of sense! In fact, it's not often that I reply to a "suggestion box" thread, and now I'm replying again!

Jacob- I guess that just means that this is a good thread even though it only has 3 stars now!

I don't think so. There's a few how-to threads, and transmission problem threads, and engine code threads. ... and there's no reason for them to 'stick around' like most of the hoo-haa threads.

When someone does a search for oh "P14278" ... They might get 10 results. If one of the threads is marked with alot of stars; that's a good indicator they might find their answer there vs one of the other threads. Maybe it was most informative, maybe not; but someone must have thought it was useful to rate it up.

This is one of the ideas anyway....

I forget to rate threads most of the time. Unless it's a really good one like this one

It's up to 4 now

I guess, along the lines of what Niki is saying, and what I was saying earlier, I'd probably only rate it with 5 or nothing, but I know not everyone on here posts like I do. I guess there are people that do rate on things like that?

If so, why can't we see the stars on the search results page?

Why in the world would everyone undo what I started!?! It was done in irony, people, irony! Like when John, I think it was, wanted all negative rep. I guess people just don't do things like that, even just for fun!

I wish I could rate this again.

I don't think it's about the miscellaneous hoo-ha or styling mod threads....I agree that the ratings system does work there to help orgers.

But when someone is just being an and rating a gtg pic thread or um, let's say a Harvest oval window bug thread with one star just because their being mean and don't like the driver, then that just sucks and it's not really helpful to anyone.

But, there are also many people here (ME! ) that very very seldom ever use the rating thread... even to rate something with 5 stars... even when something I read in a How-to was very helpful.

Take, for example, the Hot Topics threads. Someone may rate the thread with 1 star because they don't agree with the topic, when, in fact, it may be of great interest to someone else. It's all a matter of opinions, really, and when people abuse the star system just because they don't like the person who posted, it gets a little mean, ya know?

I agree with Little Miss T. It depends on how you define good. An active thread with lots of posts could be regarded as good. But how good is a thread that nobody cares to post to?

Dump the stars and let the content and replies speak for themselves.

I will give a rating to a thread if I like it. And I don't rate all threads I read. If I don't care for one I leave it alone cuz someone else may like it. It's all subjective. But obviously there are people who use the rating system to demean someone they don't like, childish behavior but it happens. Maybe a way to curb this type of behavior would be to some how list who rated the thread & with what they rated it. This way the whole Org can see what is going on. Kinda policing your peers. It may not be feasible, but rating a GTG thread because you don't like someone is rude.
All GTG threads should have 5 stars anyways, since it's members enjoying each others love of New Beetles. That's a good thing....Right?
