Hey Thom..

I'll see what we can do about enabling the postbit_legacy via an option from the UserCP.

It might take a while as the Administrator of the forum who likes to maintain complete artistic control over the site has been going through a transitional period (new job, new location etc..)

Fair enough, no hurry, just a suggestion.

Here is the official plugin to make the postbit user-selectable for 3.5.x so you won't have to look all over for it.
