Default Registering Java Chat

For those of us who drop by in chat every now and then, we see firsthand the number of frustrated people who enter the .org chat room via the .org. The frustration stems from the java chat software not being registered and every time you say something in chat, you see this: ###### Unregistered copy, evaluation only. ###### Please ask webmaster to register it.

I’m not going to pretend I know the ideology behind not registering it. There could in fact be a very legitimate reason for not doing so. I’m simply asking the webmaster to register the software like it says to do.

Obviously there is going to be some fee involved and if it means campaigning to get more .orgers to donate, I might be able to chip in a little towards the cause.

Thanks for reminding me about this. I'd sort of forgotten.

The crux of the problem is this: the old version of this site was at forums.newbeetle.org. The new version is at newbeetle.org/forums. The makers of the java chat software consider that to be two different sites and therefore want me to pay AGAIN to register the software for the new site, even though i'd already registered on the old.

I think that's crap, and I told them so. I was hoping to get a response and never did. I guess I'll just have to pay another $50. The $50 isn't really a problem -- it's just that I don't think I should have to pay twice for something i'm using once!

Oh well. I'll get it registered.

Jeff

Thanks for the super-fast response. I understand why you've put it off. I agree that their reasoning IS crap because its the same .org, just a different format. Greedy poop-heads!

Hi, Jeff!

I probably log more actual chatting time in newbeetle.org weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM than anyone else. Frequently, I see people log in, ask why they keep getting those unregistered messages, then give up and never log in again. I think that has significantly inhibited the growth of the chat room. Recently, my Trillian program failed, so I have been forced to use the Java chat. I have experienced personally how frustrating the unregistered problem can be.

If you reregister the java chat, I will contribute $20 to help pay the cost.

Thanks,

retrorich

I don't use web-based chat, but I support the idea and would be willing to contribute, as well.

For all the Mac users, I highly recommend Colloquy. www.colloquy.info

Jeff, I am on your side about how stupid it is. But I hate having that unregistered thing after each line I type... I have used other programs and still dont like them as much as the one you offer...

Thanks for re-registering... but I stand by you.

...do you need fundraising, or do you have the 50.00?...Because I am willing to toss in a little to help out.

I have it and it works great. Its the new chat visitors that are "turned off" by the annoying message.
