Post DIY Beetle Turbo S intake

To start off I removed my snowbox this morning without removing the front wheel. My exhaust and chip are soon to come. Also , I have a Forge DV. Check here for instructions. no wheel removal to take out snowbox

The intake was a quick mod to see what a difference it made. It took about an hour to piece it all together. And the total cost was $52.39 plus one Propel Berry drink. I removed the stock airbox lid. I will take out the bottom as soon as I get a shield made. All parts except one are at the local Autozone. The main pieces are made by a company called Spectrum Performance. DIY intake pieces
Here is the intake I used. They have several colors. It will fit intake tube sizes 3" through 4". They also have an all mesh design for track only which cost $44.99 .

The filter I used cost $24.99 part number 8138. They have another type that is closed on the top.

They also make a ring that attaches to the top of the filter. This lets you mount a 3" tube right to the end of the filter and run it down to the front of the car. The ring below is what I connected my 2.75" to 3" silicone tube connecting to the filter ( The silicone tube that goes from the 2.75" MAF to the 3" intake tube will have to be found. I had one laying around that was sent to me by one of my sponsors on my 2004 Scion xB. That I put a supercharger on The girl is Cassia Riley from Penthouse

Part number 8808 and cost $7.99.

I used the ring included with the above along with this to make a mount for the system. I used a threaded stud mounted to the ring and an eyelet at the other end. I used one of the factory black screws to retain this. Part number 8701 and cost $5.99

Last piece is the breather filter. I took a .75" x 1.5" piece of hose. I trimmed the small lip off the breather and pressed it into the tube. Then this is press fitted into the factory end that mounts to the stock airbox lid. I zip tied this to a close by hose so it will stay put. It comes in various colors to match your intake filter. Along with the mesh only design which cost $14.99. The one I used was part number 3998 and cost $9.99

P.S. I also pulled of the seal just below the winshield. I usually do this when I get a car. It helps to remove the heat plus better sound from the intake. Started this on a Dakota R/T with the 360 5.9 in it.

Nice writeup, nice DIY, but you said at the start that you wanted to see what kind of difference it would make. Well... I am hanging on the edge of my seat so to speak as I have been pricing this exact mod for a week now (K&N/DIY/Nuspeed/Fujita)...

So... how is it? Does it give any real performance difference?

Thanks.

Default Wow

O.K. -- the sound results are great. Now it sounds like a turbo should. Better throttle action to boot. Maybe a few hp but the bulk come from a chip. You do get a little more noise, but not as much as I did with my MINI Cooper S. I did everything I could to that car minus adding a turbo to the supercharger. A friend is hitting 300hp with a twin charged MINI ..

That is really sick! I should try to do this mod sometime.

Default Morning drive

I did an early morning drive today. It was 71 outside with about 40% humidity. At highway speeds at 2800 rpm in 6th there was a noticable differance in pull. The 5th and 4th passing is even more noticable not only in sound.

So when the Snow Box comes off you have to put something in it's place? You can't just leave it empty?

Default snowbox

When you take off the snowbox the factory inlet tube is left. It's fine by itself.
Getting much rain down your way in Florida?

Eh, no worse than a normal day. This storm got way over blown. Of course this is what happens when it's a slow news week.

The underhood air is not as bad as you think. I have a similar set up without a heat shield, the intake air is within 10 degrees of when I had the stock set up.

I get an intake air reading off of my Scan-gauge.

i made a custom 3 1/2" cold air for mine. i relocated the battery to the trunk. best set up imoa.... i made a custom set up for marvins_dad, and it's a true cai as well, but used smaller piping and went behind his drivers headlight. i would have done mine the same, but i had to put the fmic piping there instead.

If pulling air from the engine compartment were bad then VW would have never made it. The acvws pull air from the eingine compartment.

Does it not pull air through the snow box?...which does not pull air from the engine bay?

Here is a previous LONG discussion on the best way to pull air into the NB...
air intake and cai
Post #21 (page 2) is my setup that 007 did for me.

You want cooler air on the intercooler, obviously cooler intake air helps, but the difference between an open elemnt and stock box heat soak is negligible. Do you think the plastic air box doesn't get hot?

Go to the modshack website and see wht he's done. Insulating the intake so that intake air is near ambient temp. This is truly the only way to get "cool air" intake. heat shield or not, you're still sucking hotter than ambient air.

Our (JD and Mine's) point is that VW engineered the air to come from outside the engine bay...thus the snow box and it's snorkle.

its hot air. the snobox isn't a "ram air" so it is useless to unhook the airbox, put on a cone filter, and leave the snorkle. the snorkel isn't going to "ram" the air in.. the intake is SUCKING FROM THE SNORKEL not getting rammed. so when you take it apart, the snorkel can't ram it from the fenderwell. so that air filter that you just attached to the maf is now sucking hot air from the engine bay.

i only tune vw's for a living, i don't know what i'm talking about.
