Default Custom Exhaust

I've got some questions about making an exhaust system. I want to straight pipe from the catalytic convertor back. Any ideas on how this will sound, or have you already done it?

Also I don't want just to run a pipe in the stock path. I want the exhaust to exit from a wide oval tip in the center. Like the caractere kit. Can I buy just the tip, or do you know of any tip like it for cheap?

I want this to be cheap yet not cheaply done or sound cheap. Know what i mean?

If you don't want it to sound cheap; I think you should rethink putting a muffler on it.

Any exhaust shop can probably put the S bend in the pipe necessary to cause a center exit. And I have no tip ideas off the top of my head; but it does seem like it should be a common shape.

i don't want it to sound ricer-like. and i know thats probaly how it will sound. any ideas for a cheaper muffler for a throaty sound?

i just can't spend $500 on a custom exhaust.
i know there has to be a way to get a nicer throaty sound when i push it than that. i dont mind customization. if that makes any sense

Borla muffler should cost around $80.

Custom is the way to go man. Just pull up to an exhaust shop and ask them. I understand completely. I'd say blow $100 on a muffler, and the other $100 on the pipes & bending.

Pull into the next exhaust shop you see and ask them for a price, I bet they'll get you set up for a decent price.

[I had a DP installed, the resonator removed and replaced w/another piece of steel pipe, and all the joints welded for $53. Your milage may vary; I worked hard w/the guy, calling twice a week looking for "a slow day".] But you'll probably be surprised w/how little you can get away with.

But yeah; get an exhaust shop to fabricate you something; and don't get a flowmaster muffler; you'll end up happy I think. :P

I was looking for a different tip than the Caractere. I just Googled "exhaust tips" found quite a few different ones but wound up using the Caractere tip. Here is how the exhaust sounds with straight pipe no muffler... http://www3.youtube.com/watch?v=-WLpISCisVs I had a borla muffler that I removed it was just a little (and I mean little) bit more quiet with the muffler on.

I dunno, first mod to my bug w/ a TT catback and a borla muffler [there was a group buy]. Sorry.

Then I got a Eurosport DP/cat[i think?] and I had the resonator removed when that was installed. The DP made a big difference in sound [or maybe it was the resonator] that kinda worked to better seperate the high pitch turbo whine w/the exhaust grumble. It also hissed kinda loud. which I thought was the turbo.... Turned out I probably broke my flex pipe; I shortly after had a near-fire; then had them replace the flex pipe and that made everything better.

Heh... there's the history of my exhaust. :P

2.5" is the way to go man. 3" is just too much.

YeloJkt is soundin much better than she did on the Dyno in Dallas ... and still lookin as good.

Ron ... I think I need a new flexpipe installed in my APR downpipe ... is this something that the exhuast shop had in stock our did you bring your own? APR will replace the pipe, but then I will have to pay someone to install the extra O2 bung and the EGT bung .... which I still have not been able to locate, so I just as well pay to get it fixed.

so, i dont know if its quite a science with the video recording, but it actually sounds good straight, it that just me? or do i just not know good?

i just want to be as efficient as possible, if theres not much differnce in straight to muffler then i guess ill go straight piped.

yellowjkt, is it like un-bearably loud? it doesnt sound like it is i just want to know, i dont want to hear it a ton till i step on it and then i want everybody to know its going by.

if this makes any sense

The guys in our club (WetDub.com) are very, very , very much german car guys and very, very very anti-honda (fart can, unpainted body kit honda). The point is not one of them has said that they dislike the sound of my car and alot of them have told me numerous times they really like the sound.

Oh yeah I forgot It is not to loud inside the car I can carry on a conversation in my car at 75 mph but I do have to talk loud. My exhaust is...stock downpipe 2.25" with factory cat, running into a borla stainless steel 2.25 with resonator. Then at the back axle it turns into 2.5" pipe to a short 3" piece that runs into my tip.

Mine is at the talk loudly stage too ... and it is APR turbo back with no resonator.

Well ... I know which of us would win the wake the dubbers up contest on the dyno now.

my idea is stock dp all the way to cat and then 2.25 all the way to tip with center exit.

easy enough right?
am i missing anything?

also, as long as my cat is still there i wont get any weird backfire or anything right?

My Magnaflow isn't at the 'talk loudly' stage at all. It has noisy ranges, like 90km/h and above 120km/h, but for normal cruising at 110-115km/h, it's very quiet I find.

Some of the best money I've spent on the car so far was on the Magnaflow catback.

Mine is not that bad .... just makes talking on the Cell much more annoying ... so it keeps my mind, eyes and body on the job at hand ... Driving, like it should be.

I ran a straight pipe for awhile.

yes it is loud, not too bad of a tone, but the borla I have now sounds better.

and yes it will backfire "pop" when you come off the gas abruptly

try it without, if you don't like the sound its easy enough to add a muffler, lots of room under there, the stock muffler is huge.
