so what do I need to get to interface with the ECU? I have a laptop. Do I get the Vag software from ross-tech? And what cable do I need? I want to keep this cheap-under 100$. I have a 2001 1.8 Any advice. Is it worth getting. I am sick of the CEL going off.

You can get a cheap vag cable from ecstuning.com and use and old version of vagcom available on ross-tech's website. However, the old versions are basic when compared to the new versions.

Plus, you will get NO tech support from ross-tech if you use a 3rd party cable. I ended up just biting the bullet and getting mine through ross-tech. It is worth the money, period. Pony up the cash and do it right.

I agree it's cheapest to just buy the product outright from www.ross-tech.com. However, I did buy a third party cable $15, software $99 and used it as is for awhile. I was able to check and clear codes as well as make a few adjustments. Luckily, www.ross-tech.com does offer upgrades which amounts to the difference in cost of the software and cable. In the end, I was out $15 going this route.

Just a laptop and then... go here for the specifics:Ross-Tech

It's well worth every penny.
