I thought I'd Help Vdubbugman53 out by not jamming up His how-to thread and post a discussion thread for Replacing the C/V Axle.

First of all, Thanks for posting this detailed How to As I type, i'm about to jack up Cup- one of hers is gone- wobble city.

What were your symptoms that let you know that your C/V axle need replacing?

Another tidbit. I just replaced my Bearing Assembly couple weeks ago. I strongly suggest PB Blaster for loosening up that hub nut. WD-40 dosen't do squat. Let that PB soak for a good 10 minutes and she should loosen up pretty good.

Also I removed my hub nut with a 31mm socket.

Hey man, did you shop around for your C/V axle? What's the best deal out there?

I edited it your HOW TO to include the 30mm socket. Al says 30mm but I just was out in the garage and my 30mm socket is the one I was using.

Make sure its a 12 point socket. No deep well needed.

btw..... How To replace your rear wheel bearing and hub assembly thread coming soon to a forum near you.... keep your eyes out.

Too right!! It is a 30mm socket- my bad. And how could I forget the 12 point shallow. NAPA sells em for about 20 bucks.

Too much engine torque on the original OEM axle, pulled away from a stop sign and reached about 25mph then mashed the accelerator pedal about mid way, I heard a very loud POP!!! followed by no more power to the wheels, oh no, flat bed time....

Got the car home and verified my suspicion as to what had failed, right drive axle, took me about 15 or 20 minutes to remove it after putting the front-end on jack stands, no need to remove the wheel, just unbolted the top anti sway bar link bolt and the DA to tranny bolts, tapped the shaft out of the hub, dropped the inner composite shield a bit, turned the wheels to the right for clearance and removed the destroyed drive axle, level of difficulty on 1 to 10 scale, maybe about a 1...

Well, hopefully differential problems will not visit me, I run a custom built 6spd. manual tranny with a Peloquin LSD.

OEM axle arrived today, I put it in and the Beetle is back in service...

Well, at least that's all that happened to your cars.

This is what i replaced a few weeks ago on my brother's 1.8t jetta. And the sad part is that the engine is completely stock, and in a desperate need of a tuneup. But it still did that.

I broke my left axle last nite and my car is a 2008 convertible 2.5... NO ONE carries aftermarkets yet for 08...

does anyone know if a 2.0 like a 2005 assembly will work??

thanks

It is very strange for an axle to break on a car that new, I would think that this would be covered under factory warranty, unless, it was caused by an accident.

Have you checked with the VW dealership and Volkswagen of America regarding warranty coverage?... If not, I would suggest doing so.

It is unlikely that an axle from a 2.0L will work.

At any rate, it is not unusual for these axles to be unavailable through aftermarket sources, the car is too new, I would recommend sticking with the OEM part anyway.

Let us know what Volkswagen says.

Because my suspension is modified and low, they wont cover it..Its not even a question for them.. they absolutely WILL NOT cover it... No getting around it....

and the OEM part is 600.00. No thank you bc thats not even warrantied. Id rather an aftermarket 100.00 lifetime warranty axle! haha

I think i just might order the 2.0 and see if it works bc i have no choice at this point...

Car modifications cannot "legally" in and of themselves void a car warranty, you may want to check this link>> http://www.impalaclub.com/naisso/magmoss.htm.

Besides lowering a car does not really effect the axles unless it is done incorrectly.

The 2.0L is a 4 cylinder and yours is a 5 cylinder, even a 1.8t and a 2.0L of the same year require different axles so I doubt either will work in your car.

well.. it wasnt done improperly... but we DID take the sway bar off bc it was rubbing... haha

I dont know what to do.. im aggrivated

The first thing the guy said when he called me was, WHAT DID YOU HIT? so according to them, ITS MY FAULT.. and thats that

I called another dealership and they said that it depends where the stress was and where it broke whether they would cover it. BUt id rather just get a new axle and put it in for 100.00 rather than paying them 115.00 to LOOK AT IT to tell me whether they will warranty it!

Look at my avatar, that is my car, after setting the service manager straight one time I didn’t have any problem getting warranty service from that point on, I also have no problem when it is time for me to have a smog check done on my car .

Don't let these people run you, stand on their necks, have the car examined by one or two other suspension/driveline specialist and obtain documentation as to their assessment of what caused and did not cause the axle failure.

If the other shops contend that the axle failure is unrelated to the suspension modifications then you can shove that down Volkswagen's neck and force them to repair your car under warranty.

If you let them get away with this now, the will do it every time something on your car fails.
