Interior light above rear view mirror..

Hey Guys!

I just bought a 2003 VW Beetle.. I just now tried to turn on the light above the rear view mirror and there is a switch that you can move from left to right, I'm not sure what it does because um... it fell off lol

So I'm wondering, what purpose does it serve? Since it fell off, the left light came on while I was driving so I guess when it fell off it was turned to the left light. So I'm assuming you have to turn that to the left or right for the light to work?

I'm sure I could have the switch replaced but if it doesn't really do anything then I won't bother. Does anyone know?

The switch (3 positions) tells the light whether to be off, on with door opening, and constant on (map).
