May need to have the alt checked. It normally comes on when the system is not charging.

Yeap, Went to get the charging system checked and it's the alternator. Just wondering if the front has to come off and maybe radiator etc. to get to the alt....... Looks like a hard job for sure. Are reman alt's reliable or do I need to purchase oem????? Any advice is appreciated.

The front end and radiator do not need to move to get the alt out. It should only require the removal of the intake manifold.
If you go reman get one with a god warranty. If you go with a new alt see if you can get a 90A New Beetle alt. |

Underground VW parts on the Vortex has a used TDI alternator for $135 on their Ebay site...and you can take your old one in to be rebuilt as a spare.
The used alternator has under 50k ...found their Ebay store Good luck!
