Default help! Whatever it's called (fan squeaking)?

I own a 2004 1.8 turbo. The fan that is located in the middle of the engine compartment and to the left of the power steering fluid holder is squeaking. I don't know what this fan is or what it does.
Can someone, please tell me what this is and what is its purpose?
Also how to take it off. It looks like at lease, I have to take the battery out and do something with the power steering fluid, but how to get to the nuts that hold on the fan blower thing?
Thanks a lot.

Secondary Air Pump. Part of the emissions system. I've removed one from a 2.0 - I'm not sure if the 1.8T is the same. Should only be 4 bolts. I don't think you have to remove the battery, but you might have to move the power steering reservoir (sp?) over.

I removed the secondary air pump. It was part of the emissions system. I removed the bracket, and moved the air pump so I could take it out. A new pump cost 400.00 dollors. (to much). All I could say is, extra parts :-)
