Default Need vag com to program keyfob?

Hi ~
I've searched some of the other threads here but still I'm uncertain on whether or not I need to buy a VAG COM to complete the programming of my key fob? I have puchased a blank key with fob (matched all #'s) had it cut, then programmed it to lock and unlock car...that works, but it will work only for 10 seconds in the ignition. So it's my understanding that I need a VAG COM tool to program it to run the engine?? Is this right?
Thanks for any help!!

wrong. you need an SKC code. its a 5 digit code i believe that only VW can get for you. i hear it came with some cars on the key ring but if you dont have it your out of luck. and i dont know anyone who has it. you have to call VW and have it done. my dealer charges 50-75 i believe and will do all the keys you have at the same time. so if you need a spare do it at the same time. why the new key? just a spare?

No~ my car only came with one key fob, and NO transponder key. Dealer said that's all they got! Uh-huh...better part of wisdom tells me that someone put it on eBay for resale...along with my windscreen, vase, owners manual, etc etc! Anyway... only having one key is scary... Thanks FAB, I appreciate the info!

As mentioned, sometimes (rarely with the new Immo versions) the SKC is on the plastic tag that comes with the keys.

A lot of times, previous owners fail to turn in all of the keys when they sell a car or turn it in off-lease. Could be that they put it away and won't find it until later on.

As long as the part number on the new key you buy matches the number of your existing key, you're set. Dealer will then code both keys to the gauge cluster (done through a computer and the techs cannot see the Immo code).

you can get a manual off of ebay so that really isn't too big a deal.

Get the vase from VW or ebay.

The windscreen is an accessory option and did not come with the car from the factory. Previous owner may have given it away or sold it.

I agree with Des - most likely the previous owner laid these aside somewhere and didn't give them back.

It was either a factory or port installed item earlier on. My '05 came with it as an option (listed on the Monroney).

Funny story.... when my mom went and traded in her NBC (without me). After it was done I yelled at her for not making them increase the value of the car because of the windscreen. Of course at this point, when she asked, the dealership swore the value of the screen and owners manual was included in the value she got for the car.

Morale of the story... if it has value, make them give you value for it in writing or it is yours. For example don't take that **** in when you trade in the car, leave it at home. Once they assess value, then let them know you have accessories that may be of value to go with the car. They will write them into the contract if they are willing to add value to the car.

I say this because dealerships will list the used car and mark up the price for "add-ons" such as alloy wheels or a windscreen, when they sell the car. If they are gonna get extra money for it, you should too.
