Can someone post part numbers for the stock OEM HID headlights and all other associated stock OEM parts to complete this project? I feel like spending a grip at the VW dealership. but im sure i will still need to build a harness to complete the setup.

Hey guys I just picked up a set of these. I know next to nothing about wiring so I find all of this kind of intimidating.

Is there no plug-and-play solution for installing these in an older 3-pin car? I mean I can handle installing all the rheostat stuff, running that amount of wiring and getting that all functional but as for making my own harnesses I wouldn't even know where to start.

Any help or suggestions are much appreciated!

I just read the whole thread again and the first time I must have glazed over the part about PG performance making harnesses that just splice in.

I knew about the actual ballasts but I am kind of surprised to see the white part that clips over them with the big harness. I don't have those parts. I guess I'll check prices at the dealer. (Yikes)

Edit: After reading a bit more.. Are those big white brackets with the wiring harnesses the $115 part people are talking about sending to PG Performance for $500 all-in? If so that isn't so bad at all. Sorry I'm sounding like a complete newb here. Lighting is a brand new area of modding I've never dabbled in before, very excited to start though!

KUFATEC GmbH has the wiring kits to install the HIDs.

Edit: Nevermind I just found out you can get brand new OEM ballasts on eBay for $140. The $300 per ballast price at ECS scared me for a second.

the harness with the white box is oem ballast wiring harness, which you can get from 1stvwparts.com

if you plug in the prices left side is $111 and right side is $144 i dont know why they are different prices

what kufatec sells i believe does not plug and play to a 3 pin harness but it must be a 5 pin harness.

What you then have to do is get another plug and create this

this is the the splice harness that plugs into the harness that kufatec makes and then you splice is into the car harness.
notice its 5 wires, 3 go to existing wires, one goes to rheostat wire, and the other is the city light

Well 1stWVParts won't ship to Canada so that leaves me in a mess since the dealer wants over $400 for the two harnesses, plus then I'd have to send them out to get modified anyway. I also don't really want to have to pull the front clip off every time a ballast blows so I'm going to go the cheap route and wire these things up following the diagram.

Hey SMG,

You could get 1st VW Parts to ship the harnesses to the UPS store in Buffalo, NY and I could grab them for you and mail them to you for cheap (I work in St. Catharines, ON sometimes which is really close to the border). Let me know.

Oh nice thanks for the offer! I'm going to try to do this with an aftermarket drop-in HID kit just to prove it can be done but if I fail I might have to take you up on your offer.

Yeah, I have a drop-in kit too, but the truck will be making them work with a Bi-Xenon setup.

You're going to need bulbs with the proper D2S, D4S or whichever bulb type they use. Rebased H7 bulbs will not work.

You can get adapters for drop-in ballasts to D2S.

I just 10-15 minutes talking to Matt at The Retrofit Source. It looks like their H4 wiring harness will work no problem with our 3-pin H1 setups. So it looks like this swap is only going to cost me ~$60 plus what I paid 2 years ago for my drop-in HID kit. Sure beats $500 in dealer parts plus another $300-$400 for a pair of ballasts that are notoriously unreliable.

Meh, OEM housings + bulbs make it OEM enough. I don't really care how they're powered as long as it's as inexpensive as possible.

I decided that I want to put my HID kit in the TDI so I am replacing the whole setup.

1) Morimoto Digital 35w ballasts w/ integrated igniters.

Matt at TRS said these are the best ballasts for installs like this. They're completely watertight, where the "OEM" ballasts from Denso and Mitsubishi aren't,

2) H4 Bi-Xenon Wiring Harness

Matt said that the H4 bulb has the right wires and that it will be plug and play, I just need to repin a few wires and it's ready to go.

Total cost: $150 (Free shipping!)

That's it. Waaaaaay cheaper than $800+ in dealer parts.
