Dual Exhausts

The only thing about a borla intercooler tip-3" outside and 2" inside pipe to carrry dual exhaust system. I have 2 1/2 system and seems that it would be better to keep tip at 2 1/2-and not restrict exhaust at the tip. I could be wrong about this.
