Checkout these guys: HID Kits: DDM Tuning - HID Kits, DEPO Lights, BMW & Porsche Lighting & Bumpers most of their kits if not all come with a lifetime warranty that also covers bulbs. I've bought 3 kits(3000k 35w, 5000k 35w and 6000k 55w) from them.

Friends dont let friends install HID kits.

Do a proper retrofit or forget it.

If you're going to use a drop-in kit, at least be courteous enough to other drivers to also retrofit a proper HID projector.

There are no "drop-in" kits for proper HID projectors. HID projectors will already accept the typical D2S HID bulb. HID "kits" are rebased with halogen-type bases.

A proper HID retro would typically include this:
Projectors: BMW M3 E46 E38 Audi TT BOSCH Xenon HID D2S PROJECTORS:eBay Motors (item 350296128659 end time Jan-20-10 16:06:46 PST)
Bulbs: NEW Germany OEM Philips 85122+ D2S 35W Xenon HID BULBS:eBay Motors (item 380189003701 end time Jan-15-10 14:32:45 PST)
Ballasts: BMW Audi Hella Gen3 Xenon HID KIT BALLAST IGNITER BULBS:eBay Motors (item 300378231127 end time Dec-22-09 19:52:42 PST)

It is also essential to wire up a relay harness to power the ballasts as it can burn up the stock wiring otherwise. I can link a wiring schematic if needed, but basically you have a trigger wire from the stock wiring that energizes the relay. The relay then takes power direct from the battery and sends it to the ballasts. Your stock wiring remains intact and no load is placed on it.

The projectors I linked to mount right in the place of the stock halogen projectors with very minimal modification.

The result is excellent light output that will not blind oncoming traffic unlike HID kits.

I just got my HID kit today (christmas present) I remember that I had found directions on how to install a long time ago when I was just considering it, and now I can't find them for the life of me (should've bookmarked it). I've searched on VWVortex and on the forums here, but I'm either typing in the wrong words or the thread has been deleted.
Any idea on a good place for install directions?

lol dzlbug you are no help...

I put my ballast directly behind the headlight housings... there is a little cubby back there that some ballast will fit right in to. Otherwise, there is enough space behind each headlight for the ballast to just sit comfortably.

I did not know this.

What is the difference between a halogen projector and a HID projector?

And how does it effect the light output?

Completely different projector bowl, shield, focal point, lens and bulb holder. It has big effects on the light output. HID kits in stock halogen projectors have hotspots, poor light spread and creates glare for oncoming drivers.

Stock H7 halogen Bosch projector on left, Bosch D2S HID projector (Audi TT, BMW E46, etc) on right. Same mounting flange, completely different projector.

$30.00 USD for an HID kit. Is this real?
I put philips HID's on my 99 bug back in 1999 and it cost around $600.00 for the kit.

I've never had any problems with my retrofits, even though I'm considering E46 projectors for next year.

I bought 3 kits(Slim Ballast) from them. Being that they're somewhat local I didn't order from them, I just stopped by their store/warehouse and bought them. I'm going on a year with no problems from my HID's.

$30.00 with LifeTime Warranty, can't beat it.

There ARE "drop-in" kits for for proper HID projectors. They come with these D2S adapters and bulbs.

The D2S HID Kit is $15.00 more.

There ARE "drop-in" kits for for proper HID projector. I'll get pics up later.
And you could just change the halogen reflector to a xenon one too... Also pretty cheap and saves quite a bit of $$ vs buying the OEM ones.

Honestly, if I were to do the retrofit, i would skip out on USA-DOT things all together and go straight for Ecodes! The beam pattern just seems so much efficient and useful with Ecodes than with DOT. I think the US should copy the Europe on this one...

So - if I went with the DDM 55 watt kit and the projectors that DZLBUG posted a link for - would that basically be all I needed to get a good setup?

Been wanting to do this for a while and the DDM Tuning kit just looks amazing for the price...but I do want to get the proper projectors if they are compatible.

If you are going to go that route, stay away from the 55w kit and just go with the 35w...trust me. Also, stick with the 4500k bulbs, anything higher and you are only losing light output. These 6000k, 8000k, 1000000k whatever bulbs are ricey junk. The purple/blue "flicker" of OEM HID's comes from light refraction at the cutoff line...not from the bulb itself.

Also make sure you buy or build a relay kit and try not to hack up the stock wiring.

Personally though, I'll take a used ballast/bulb from Germany long before I'll take a new one from China, Taiwan or wherever. But that is my choice, you are free to make your own.

nevermind....seems like a sensitive topic to bring up.
I will look at DZLBug's "Everything you need to know about HID and how they should be installed and where to get them" How-to so they are done perfectly...wait...he has not made one, but tells us what not to do ;-)
