Talking Air Horn

I've decided the time has come to get a more powerful horn for my car. With the way traffic is in this town, its a necessity. Red light runners, people turning into or moving over into my lane and lots of other stupidity. The stock horn does a decent job, but I need more tone and volume.

I really want a set of real Hadley air horns, but there is no room for those big trumpets, tank and air compressor. I've heard previously about Stebel Nautilus Compact air horn for motorcycles and cars. They have the volume but the tone is too high. Then I came across this one, their Compact Truck Horn. 134 decibels, and the low tone that otherwise has only been available in real air horns. It is still quite small, only a little bigger than their other compact horn. It is all self-contained, direct drive and is powered by a relay harness to draw power direct from the battery. It should easily fit in the stock horn location. Best yet, its only $75 shipped in the lower 48.

I just ordered one up tonight and I intend to do a quick installation write-up with pics and I'll see if I can get some decent video up. Should be fun.

Found something even better. There is a guy in MI who puts together kits of different horns for different sounds. This guy combined the Stebel Compact Truck horn with a Magnum Low Tone horn and sells it as a kit for $73. If I can I am going to cancel my other order and just order this one. If not, I'll just order the Magnum low tone electric horn and call it good.

Here it is:
Welcome To Stebel Engineered Sounds - Are You Man Enough To Ride With Stebel?

Here is what it sounds like:
YouTube - Big Daddy Airhorn

More of a train horn sound, just not as loud, but a lot of trucks sound like that too. I think this will work real well for the lane drifters and red light runners.

He can't quite be your guinea pig... Its not like anyone responds to horns down here anyway. You should know that by now!!

Default hey now...

very true....which is why i was hoping this would be along the same lines as those train horns rednecks have in their big a$$ trucks......

also, the placement of the horn should influence its sound....might sound a little more impressive on one of our dubs.....one can only hope....

come on dzl...do it...do it...do it....

I SOooo want one of these too. I wish I could find one that sounds like a freight train. Hehe! That would be too funny!
But since I haven't located the train horn, THIS sounds Perfect!
Sometimes us beetle owners get no respect.
Let me know how the install goes DZLBUG. It's official YOU are my hero.

I have always wanted a dual horn set up one with the old school horn and one with some kind of air/train horn so if they don't listen to my meep meep they will get the point with the second shot

Sorry, I've been busy with work and other responsibilities. My car no longer has reverse gear, so I've also been getting my shop cleaned up and my truck back into running condition so I can drive it to work while I am doing my 5 speed swap.

I'll probably throw it in sometime when I am underneath there and will update whenever that happens.

So where did you find the air-cooled beetle horns? I often thought that since VW brought the retro look back in the NB, they should have also brought it back with the "proper" horns on it. Let's face it, no one listens to horns any more or less...mostly we do it to scare the bejesus out of some poor slime ball whiz kid walking out of a store and texting as he/she walks across the street in front of us......
