Default Question for a seasoned Tech.

I am currently working on my Associates in automotive, and getting all of my ASE, so I can get Master tech certified.

My question:

What do you think the possiblity of putting a 16 valve head on a typical 8 valve AEG beetle motor? Due to the ECU, does it have to be a AEG specified head?

The next part, was trying to find out how to bypass VW's dreaded ECU so it wont throw a million codes, if I were to do so.

I dont like turbo's, I prefer Superchargers. I ask because eventually after building a head. I would like to slap a supercharger on the vehicle. However, again the VW ECU is the tricky part.

So far: New waterpump, Vogtlund Coilover's Linear rate, new wheelbearings, new gas tank release actuator & cable, new key fob, new rear window, new oil pan, new serpentine belt.

Still to come: Porsche 993 Big-Red brake conversion, Shortshifter, sway-bars, wheels, ECU Upgrade, New built head.

Im working on it as fast as I can. Unfortunately, some of that stuff kinda hit me all at once.

Your reffering to the 16v head on the typical 8v AEG long block?

No, I think Justin (TheCheat) did a 20/20 (20V head onto a 2.0L block, which he intended to run naturally aspirated but then fell into a good deal on a big turbo?) I dunno, it's hard to keep up w/ the man's projects, but yes, good advice to ask him if it's been done and how...

the head swap is totally possible, there is a guy in Canada with the 8v block and 16v head still running on a chipped 8v ecu, with no codes.

I will be honest with you tho its not worth the time and money, especially if your not going to do boost right off, because it lowers the comp ratio with out custom pistons, pefect for boost but would be slower then your stock head Na.

also so you know you need to swap the crank gear for a custom machined one and use a 1.8t water pump and tensoner. its complicated job. and there is def some fab involved.

look to the vortex for help.

I am wondering why you prefer a supercharger? Or why you don't like turbos? Just curious. I tend to love turbos.

Couple reasons:

I dont like how turbo's spool up. I love the sound of the SC.
I like that its belt driven. I dont like the sound of a turbo with a BOV.

I know the pro's and con's of each. The SC just appeals to me more. Supercharger seems to be more of a statement in my eyes, because everybody and their grandma, is throwing turbo's on everything, including Honda's, Geo Metro's etc...

I dont want something everyone else has. Hardly anybody rock SC, but turbo's, are a different story.

One of the many reasons, I bought a beetle. Uniqueness. Thats why SMG's Beetle was so unique in my eyes. I wish I was a part of these forums, soon enough to ask how much he was selling it for....

I don't like the sound of a blow off valve either, except on a high HP race car.
A far as the pros and cons of each...here is my view on them. A turbo is free horsepower. As the spent exhaust is exiting out the tailpipe, why not use to spin a turbo..... Now a SC will have the cool factor......but in my opinion, on a four cylinder a SC just has to much parasitic drag...Think of it like turning on your A/C, on a small engine you really feel the load while on a V8 you don't notice it as much.

If I could find a good turbo and at a significantly lower price. I would consider it. If im gonna spend 2G's on an upgrade, ill prefer the SC.

Default SC's vs. Turbos...

Various car makers are currently Turbo charging their large V8's, straight 6's and 4 cylinder engines much more than Supercharging any of their engines presently. Porsche, BMW, Bentley, VW/Audi, etc. have all made models that use twin turbos, 4 turbos and single turbo gas and Diesel engined cars for a very pragmatic reason. You get more power for the fuel used and with simpler equipment. While I love the sound of a good supercharger, I like even more the sound of a turbo engine with proper intake and exhaust. The many arguments pro and con regarding both technologies is quite lengthy but in the end a Turbo charger is easier to install, gives you more options regarding size a manufacturer, and has more available that will fit your engine and car. The ECU change is critical along with increased fuel preasure and larger injectors along with the correct blow off valve assembly but in the end a Turbo will cost you slightly less. JK

my boyfriend owns a turbo charged 32 valve V8 motor and theres nothing stronger then a turbo charged V8. Supercharge motor can't keep up.
