removing center console

has anyone ever removed their center console? and if so is there much involved? I looked at it and it does not seen to hard, the only thing that I'm not to sure of is hoe to get the auto gear shift handle off. I'm working on a 2003 if that makes any difference. Any help is much appreciated.

Or...here is what Bentley has to say about removing the entire dash...

I guess the propper term would be "Central Air Outlet Console"
