I've seen quite a few posts on this. It shouldn't be too terribly difficult, depending on your mechanical ability. Since it's just plastic, it should be pretty inexpensive too. I've changed them on other cars and they usually press into place and are held on by a bracket or two.

$2.49 at ECS Tuning

yes, theres shipping, but its a better price than my dealer could do. these things get brittle and crumble all the time, so don't worry- theres nothing wrong with your car (in that aspect).

installation is not hard at all. my little brother can do it (he's 10). once you have all the pieces of the old one out, shine a flashlight down and youll see a little metal tube sticking out of what is actually your oil pan. the orange tube slides over that and fits down tight (you'll hafta push a little hard - almost to where you think you're gonna break it).

when i go out to my car later today, ill snap a pic of exactly which way the tube lines up fer ya.

ok - got the pic for ya. i forgot to mention that its easiest to do this sans engine cover. in fact, i can't imagine doin it with the cover on.

sorry the pic was blurry, but it was dark, in the parking garage, and my camera died after i took this one pic so i'm working with it. (by the way, gator, this pic is a 2.0L engine. i dunno which you have. i know the tube for 1.8T and TDI is exactly the same, but i'm not positive on the placement.)

on the 2.0L, the tube lines up on the right side of the little support hook, and the slot slides on the hook. again, push hard enough for it to fit tight. just replace the engine cover to check and make sure you did it right.

also, make sure you don't drop any sand or anything in the oil pan hole before you slide the tube over it. thats the last thing anyone wants is a gear chewing up a bunch of sand.

if you need a clearer pic, or one of how it connects to the oil pan, ill take one tomorrow.

Buttercup's tube broke too. Just the other day. She's a 1.8t, but I'm sure it replaces just like the 2.0's. Thanks for the tip.

Order a bunch of them and give them as stocking stuffers to all of your Beetle owning friends! These break on everyone's car. (and before you say yours has never broke, don't worry - it will).

where can I get one for my 1.8t? I'd like to avoid the dealer so I can save a buck or two. Help.

scroll up to the link in my first post - ECS Tuning for $2.49.

my dealership wanted $15, so its a big savings.

Hey MOB987,

I did and that's what has me scratching my head. I went to that link and it only had a listing for a 2.0 engine which you possess. Mine is a 1.8t. Are you telling me that the dipstick tube is for both 1.8t and 2.0? I'll give it another shot bro. Maybe I missed a mouse click or something.

EDIT: Hey, I just went back to that link and it specifies 2.0 engine. So what gives? I'll give em a ring on their toll free line and get the skinny from their service dept.

Oh yeah, Are you gonna be home when the strawberry festival comes around in Late Feb./March? The fam and I are planning on making our yearly pilgrimage their. Maybe we can hook up.

that's correct. the dipstick tube is engine-unspecific.

that orange one is the one for the 2.0, 1.8, and TDI, no matter the VW Mk4 model (Beetle, Jetta, etc.).

at least thats what the local parts manager told me. (i trust him.)

The TDI dipstick tube is different.

However, if you get it from ECS you're paying about $8-10 to ship it. If you're only after the tube, it makes more sense to get it from the dealer (which is the route I took - instant gratification).

Yeah Des. I've been thinking about that. I'm heavily thinking about going to Ash Tisdale and picking mine up and save my PayPal money for other goodies.

By the by. Get back with me on your timing belt adventure. I really wanna know how it went.

Just priced this part from NAPA Online, and it ranged from $1.19 to $1.39. I think I'll buy a few for those 'oh crap'
moments. haha. Part# for a 2.0 is ATM06A103663C. Hope this offers some help!
