what other scanners and/or software is used to diagnose vws and audis besides vag-com?

VChecker is a common one.

It can be found here. I wouldn't spend the extra on the pro, but thats up to you.

The Vchecker is a nice alternative to VAG-COM. They are not as feature rich as the VAG-COM software is, but they will work for clearing / reading codes. The main advantage of these over a "generic" scan tool is it gives you VAG code along with the general OBD2 codes, many of the others only read the general OBD2 codes.
