Question What does P0101- Mass or Volume Air Flow mean??

Hello!

I have a 2006 convertible Beetle, and just recently my check engine light went on. I went to "Schucks" to get the the code, and this is what they told me: "P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance". I have no idea what that means!! Does anyone know what it means and what needs to be done to have the problem fixed?? Please if you could email me at ruberducke@earthlink.net, thanks!!

It sounds like it could be a MAF going bad (meters the intake air), but you may try clearing the code and seeing if it comes back. A new MAF sensor is a pretty straight forward replacement. MAF's don't often go bad unless you drive in an area with LOTS of dust, or over oil a replacement filter, but being an electrical component, they can certainly just go bad as well.

Which motor do you have?

If you haven't already done so, instead of buying a new MAF, see if cleaning it works first. Go to your local auto store (advance or auto zone) and get a bottle of MAF cleaner. Make sure it says it's for MAF and not carb cleaner otherwise you will end up buying a new one. You will need to remove the top of the air box where the filter is (there is a write up on how to do this on this website just search for it), then remove the MAF from that top and spray the crap out of the MAF. Once it's completely dry, reassemble and have that code cleared and see if it comes back. If it doesn't, you're good to go. If it does, then you will have to replace it as Jon @ ESCtuning has said. Good Luck and hope it helps.

Cleaning them doesn't work. Can actually make a good MAF go bad. Try having the code cleared and if it does return, it's MAF time.

Only reason why I say to try cleaning is from personal experience. I used an oil filter (I know, bad) and it dirty it, used the MAF cleaner and the code never returned. (It had been cleared before cleaning and it came back) but once I cleaned it, it hasn't come back and that was more than a half a year ago. Next time it comes up though I will get it replaces because you can only clean something some many times and didn't mean that you should clean the MAF all the time, just if it comes back from clearing it, it can't hurt if you need to replace it anyways, thats all.
