I'm not sure there are a lot of people around here that have experience with both US and Euro NB models. I know there are different motors in the European cars that we dont get here. I imagine most everything else is the same, since they are all made in the same place (Mexico).

The 2005.5-2010 Jetta is a VERY detuned car here in the states vs europe. There the Jetta comes equipped from the factory and could be considered a competitor to the Mercedes C class in terms of quality and equipment. The US Jetta, on the other hand, has a much lower price and amount of features and competes well with the Volvo S40, Honda Civic, Mazda 3 in features and price, but it still comes quite a bit detuned. Thankfully, the quality is still there and it is possible to add the equipment to get that mercedes level car.

But thats the mk5 Jetta. The Beetle is still on the mk4 platform that was shared with the 1999.5-2005 Jetta. I really don't remember if those had a different suspension set up in Europe vs Us, but I don't think it did. That goes for all 1998-2011 Vw Beetles.

jetta from 2005. , thoungh it isn't officialy, could be perceived as merc c oponent because of size and not much smaller wheelbase taken from golf V of course
new jetta is announced as differently suspension tuned for europe and us because europian market is considered more conscious of driving aspects of the car than americans so it is expected that new jetta for europe should have much better handling

I've driven both, as rentals and as friends' cars, both here and in Europe on several ocassions in the last, oh, ten years or so.

I'm pretty sure... Anyone who supposedly equates the quality and assembly of a Jetta to a Mercedes, has never been in a Mercedes. Even the taxis made from bottom-of-the-pile Euro MBs are superior to anything VW puts together (well... this side of a Phaeton).

Mercedes competitors are many, including the usual German suspects and even Jags and some Alfa Romeo models. And VW models do overlap some MB demographics. But comparing them quality-wise? Please.

you are not much into cars obviously, sorry, but you are not, you only follow once established criteria
merc c's enterior from late nineties is crap and can't hold a candle to passat from the same age
21st century c class still doesn't have better enterior than pasat 5.5, ist's about the same for latest models od both cars
mentioning alfa romeo is total joke, their build quality is always bellow class level and almost every car in every comparable class has better quality than every alfa romeo
bmw's dashboard even today sits in eighties and nineties so it is pretty bland for a lot of money

but back to the point, so, most of you think that us end euro beetle are the same
