I am in the process of doing a proper HID retrofit. i have my Audi TT projectors. i need wither new lenses for my old headlights or a new(er) set of OEM lights.
My question is; if i were to buy a D2S kit, one of the philips ones, do all the ballasts have the same input. could i buy a great D2S kit and then a relay that would work from my H1 harness to the relay to the Harness? i thought i remembered a post on this either on here or on TDI club but i couldn't find it. thanks for any help. |

If you buy a D2s Kit, all of the ballasts should have the same output if you buy them that way. Either a 35w or a 55w should be perfectly fine. I was using a 35w 5000k Drop in kit, but i'm moving those to my fogs and I'm going to use a 5000k 55w D2s kit for my new lowbeams. If you currently already have an HID kit for H1 bulbs like me, all you need is this. But if you're prdering new ballasts for a D2s bulb and everything now, you won't need that. What all do you have and what do you plan on doing?

well, i have the audi TT projectors and my original headlights. that's it so far. i was thinking about getting this kit. Philips 4300k HID D2S Retrofit Kit it looks to me like all philips stuff withe the relay harness that will plug into the H1 set up. i guess i could go cheaper with buy individual ballasts and bulbs from eBay, but that's taking a risk on parts that i know that i can't fix if they're broken.

what about these guys here? DDM Tuning : HID Kits I was looking at a couple of their kits that they have, they are also one of the sponsers on this site but do you anyone who has had these? I am thinking about doing just the fogs with these and I figured, for the money...it's not a bad investment to see how well they work. And my question about what you guys are talking about, what is the difference between the regular HIDs and the D2S HIDs?

If you haven't changed your projector for a xenon one, then will need to use a H1 HID kit. If you bought a Xenon projector like we did for a proper retrofit, then you have to buy a D2s kit. What I did was buy a H1 kit to use for a few months until i could afford to buy projectors. After I bought projectors, i then bought a D2s kit. The H1 kit will just get moved from my lowbeams to my highbeams. ![]() I recommend you buy the xenon projectors & D2s kit now and do it right the first time. Doing so will cut glare from the Halogen Projector. Remember, the Regular projectors is for a Halogen bulb. An HID bulb is longer, stronger, and brighter and is beyond the capabillities of the projector. If you buy a Xenon projector, you will not have that issue ![]() |

Plus, the stock projectors are meant for a H1 bulb. The Xenon projectors are meant for a D2S. Xenon on the left & stock halogen on the right. Note the size of the reflector bowl and the bottom where the bulb attaches. ![]() I'm still in the middle of the retrofit because i forgot to order the adaptor to power the HID kit ![]() ![]() But overall, this is a simple project and doesn't take long. The first headlight took almost 3 hours because I wasn't 100% sure how to do a certain step. But the second headlight was done in almost 45 minutes. |

oh ok, I was doing some reading on it after I did my post before and realized that the bulbs are longer than halogens and the reflectors are different so I apologize without doing a little research first. Side note, 2006+ like mine have H7 bulbs instead of the old H1. Sad part about it, I found the cheapest (GEs instead of Sylvania) works best since they have a problem about going out within 3 months or less. When my first bulb went out I was kinda excited because I got to tackle something new with the car without having the dealer touch it...saving me 70+ dollars minus bulb cost.
Anyways, I wanted to put in the Sylvania Silver Stars (brighter and slight blueish tint) Both blew with a 3 month period. So I went with plain Sylvania Xtra Vision (no tint)...blew again in about 3 months. Went to Walmart and picked up some plain GE auto bulbs and haven't touched them in over 6 months now...sad isn't it lol. Thanks for all the advice, I love coming on here and getting help or a little more education on our little adopted childern ![]() |

You can use a HID kit. There isn't anything really wrong with it other than the glare. If your lenses are clear, its not really noticible. You can order yours here. Just be sure you specify H7 bulbs .I highly recommend the retrofit, but you can try the regular drop in kit first. I had no problem with mine in the months that I used the ones I got from them. I just changed the projectors recently myself for the retrofit. |

I installed an H1 Philips 4200K kit about 6 years ago and it has worked like a charm ever since, deciding on the best place to put the ballasts took awhile but the actual installation was pretty quick.
Recently one of my ballast went bad due to moisture so I replaced both with hermetically sealed digital ballasts, the new ballast bulb connections were different so I also installed 4200K Philips bulbs for the new ballast units. This worked out well because the new style ballast/bulb system placed the connections so that serviceability was much better. I have had no trouble with glare etc., I have perfect clarity and aim with excellent visibility, the main key is to make sure that your headlight lenses are crystal clear (no oxidation).

awesome advice, thanks guys once again. fl_bug, yes my headlights are crystal clear, no signs of yellowing or anything like that. As far as the kits go, I was planning on using DDM anyways, they seem to have the best price and if they don't work or have TOO much glare...if any noticable at all...I'm not out alot of money for the drop in kits and will just have to go for the retrofit then later. Again, thanks
