I'd like to do this right for my sons safety, although i have considered attempting to disconnect or isolate it through vagcom but after research people say this is a bad idea.. thought maybe somekind of slave airbag could be fitted so as not to affect the airbags?
After searching here i cannot find anything on this topic... Any ideas or thoughts welcome.

NO! to a way to turn it off. By most States laws, he can't sit in the front till 12 or something at which time it won't be a issue. If you use a child seat in the front, the seat is provisioned to not read the weight and not turn the airbag on. It's in your manual. All, at least for my year '05. You don't say what year yours is. If you need specific information you need to give the details of the car.
