Default Homelink Install

I've been pretty busy with the Beetle lately. I've added the fog light switch (in preparation for a new front grill w/fog lights), center armwrest, parcel shelf and iPod adapter (ipod2car). Now I want to tackle adding Homelink.

I have the homelink unit, and after looking things over I decided I'm going to add it between the ceiling cubby hole and the mirror (see photo below):

I've taken things apart and the "hidden" part of the unit will fit fine, and there are plenty of wires I can tap into close by. I'm just a little leary about cutting the headliner for the homelink buttons to protrude:

Anyone see any problems with cutting the headliner? Would it be prone to tear? The button cover will cover any cuts I need to make, but don't want to run into trouble later.

I have the factory system, the 3 button control is in the sunvisor. I have both the driver's (containing the Homelink) and the passenger's, in as new condition, in pearl gray, NB only, different for the NBC (which is why I have them and didn't install them). $225.00 Shipped.

Did they move this control to the center overhead console at some point in time?

No, I don't believe they ever offered them the way I'm proposing. I appreciate the offer, but so far I'm about $24 into this, I'm hoping I can make this work without over spending.

I can post a photo later, but I got one of the buttons to program successfully. I'm guessing my other garage doors (Wayne Dalton) require a slightly different model of Homelink, since the unit in my other car is working fine.

Fortunately the "ebay" seller I bought it from is going out of his way to help me, and had me send him the numbers off the "working" unit so he can find me one (he already sent one replacement).

In the meantime, since my wife parks in the garage where the button works, I swapped Homelink units between the cars, so I have the one that works on my garage.

I "bit the bullet" and cut my headliner and installed the unit this weekend, and it looks good. I'm very happy with the results.
