Question Neuspeed P-flo Should I or should I not?

I have a brand new Neuspeed P-flo that I'm debating if I really want to install it....

Regardless of the better response time, HP and perhaps MPG after listening to YouTube - Neuspeed P-Flo intake sound demo while he had his windows rolled up, I'm afraid the noise would drive me crazy while driving with the top down.

Like Beltaine said in a prior post:

One word: Loud.

Part of me loves it and gets giddy everytime the DV pops off, another part of me thinks "where'd my nice quiet cruise go?"
Any thoughts?

Better off selling it to some other dolt as all it will do is make it louder. There will be ZERO increase in response time, HP or MPG. Nothing but a noisy waste of money.

I've always doubted it's credentials because when one thinks about it... If the German engineers could have got to have better response time, HP or MPG by simply eliminating the flow box they would have already done it.

I mainly bought it because it's brand new for a fraction of it's retail price and now it's going on EBay for $125.

Thanks for your input

This "dolt" bought it.

Sometimes things are purchased or changed on a car purely for the visceral experience; such as an air horn.

Engineers--and accountants, even German ones--can and frequently do make decisions when designing and building a car that appeal to the majority of the car buying population, leaving the aftermarket to fill the individualistic choices. More horse power, more torque, more MPG and yes, even more engine noise can always be found ... but will all these changes still allow a manufacturer to build a car for a profit, at at price point, while appealing to the intended market?

Regarding this specific air cleaner, while there may be little, singular benefit, coupled with an exhaust and tune, it'll come into play and benefit will be felt ... can't wait to get my new toy, if I only to enjoy less civilized engine noise on my spirited commute.

The tune is the only thing that is going to give you more power. All the exhaust and intake is going to do is increase noise. If that is what you are looking for, then great. Just realize that there are no power or efficiency gains from intake/exhaust mods on this engine...either with or without a tune. The only time it "might" have an impact, is if you are running a big turbo, ported head and other associated hardware. At the level most of us are satisfied with, an aftermarket intake/exhaust are just expensive noisemakers.

Default Quantitative Results!

Okay, air cleaner installed, here's some info:

~ 1.8t (APH), 5 Speed, 100k miles
~ identical test runs performed, about 45 minutes apart
~ used "Decibel" iPhone app, on 4G iPhone
~ phone placed in passenger cup holder, upside down (speaker up)
~ windows closed, sunroof closed, radio off, A/C off
~ I do have a VW roof rack installed, w/ surf pads

BEFORE:
Idle 55db
40 MPH, 76db
65 MPH, 79db

AFTER:
Idle, 53db
40 MPH, 75-76db
65 MPH, 79db

Observations:

At normal operating speeds and acceleration, there is no audible difference; in fact, the db meter used--a rather un-scientific db meter I might add--showed the idle quieter, while I personally observed the same or similar cabin noise.

However, while under full throttle acceleration there is a definite noise difference; the engine sounds throatier and you can hear the waste gate operating, similar to a BOV, though not nearly as loud or "ricer".

In hindsight, I should have measured acceleration differences, though this starts to get tricky because of consistent acceleration and plotted points on the acceleration curve. Yeah, I'm not doing this ... I don't have the inclination nor the desire to uninstall/reinstall.

Oh, side note, why the heck does Neuspeed use 7/16" hardware?? Everything on the engine is metric and a great deal is 10mm ... seems fairly obvious that metric hardware should be used!!

I was mainly concerned while with the top down it being a bit loud. I'm glad to hear that it arrived okay and you're pleased with it.

Dude, was awesome, packaged great, all components there and FAST!

Thanks!!

Regarding top down driving, I used to own a convertible and found the majority of noise wasn't from the engine or drive train ... you'd expect wind, right? Nope! The majority of noise experienced in a drop top is ... other traffic. Their stupid fart cans, their too loud stereo's; and on the freeway, big rigs generate a LOT of noise as do regular trucks with over sized mud tires.

Good point!
