Dory is not behaving!!

So, I took my beetle Dory in today for service at the local VW dealership. She has been hard shifting pretty regularly for over a month now and it was time to get her looked at.
Well, guess what? I have her at the dealership and she WON"T HARD SHIFT. For the life of me I can't get her to do it.
The service guy assumed it was because the engine was warmed up after the 20 minute drive over there, but I can't be sure.
They are going to keep her for the afternoon and drive her later and see if it happens later but neither him or I driving could make it happen.

Is this typical with a hard shift issue? Does it get better as the car warms up? I'm just worried they won't find anything because they can't get it to do it.
