There are little plastic clamp-on wire taps that make it easy to add a trailer wiring. U-Haul has wiring kits with converters for sale. You'll probably have to hang the connector out of the trunk when towing.

I used a converter because of the fear of all those electronics. I powered the converter from the power plug in the trunk, driver's side. You'll still need to connect the light wires from your lights, but with a converter these will just be used to trigger the particular solenoid.
