Am surprised that my VW dealer didn't offer installed
turbo timers for the Turbo models since they agree that it is a vital add on if your purchasing the new Turbo Beetle. After installing a unit you can avoid having to wait, with the engine idling after a drive, for the extremely heated oil to cool down without you having to sit in the car. Just turn your ignition off and leave the car. Once the timer unit gets a reading that the oil has cooled down it will automatically shut power down. Failure to keep things running after a drive will add 'unlubricated' wear to the engine. |

Don't believe it's called a Turbo timer, but the 1.8T does indeed have a cool down system.
In addition to the standard belt driven water pump, there is a small electric water pump. Once the engine is turned off the electric pump keeps coolant circulating. Haven't actually timed it, but think it will can run for up to 20 minutes, or quicker if the temp cools enough to shut it off. If the dealer was suggesting yet Another add-on it would appear lack of knowledge or enhanced profits. |

The turbo isn't cooled by coolant though. Its more just to cool the engine down, not so much the turbo.
Turbo timer isn't necessary unless you run the car hard a lot. Even if you run it hard, just drive it normal for a minute or two before you are finished driving you should be good to go.
