Default 2000 beetle, Need Advice! Too many problems.

I have major concerns about this car, I bought it a couple of months ago I desperately needed a car and my mother got me my 2000 beetle. I'm sorry i really don't know about cars at all and especially this car. But I'm not sure what type it is i know there different types, this one uses regular gas and it's not the turbo.

But anyways lately whenever I'm driving it turns off. Like seriously I'm driving home from school and without a warning it turns off. Whenever it turns off the battery light comes on. I checked the battery and the battery is good. Went to the VW dealer and they told me it could be a hose that it's getting air or something like that and it affects it whenever I turn it on and driving. I bought the part for $40. Didn't work.

Could it be the Alternator? or something else? Has anyone else had this problem? To repair how much would it cost?

But can anyone help? because right now I just want to my car.
New to this site. Not sure if im doing this right

Welcome aboard. Yes you are doing it right. Although if your car is a non turbo then it is the 2.0 motor. The turbo motor is a 1.8T....the T is for turbo. You may want to post in the 2.0 section, or the "Questions issues and problem section of the forum, as you may get a little more feedback.

First thing people will ask is when you took it to the dealership, did they scan for codes? If so what are the numbers?
It could be a lot of things, so tracking down the cause can be hard without getting the car scanned. Now the dealership, or "Stealership" as we call them around here, charges about $100 just to scan the codes. But your local autozone will do it for free. If ya can get the codes, if there is any, it will help us point you in the right direction. This place is the best for figuring out problems in your NB. It's always best to ask the people who drive them. Most of the time we know more about the problems the the stealership. The stealership wants your money. We just want you to enjoy your car. Stick around, we can get ya through this.

Can you turn the car back on right away with no problem afterwards?

I'd say its either your alternator or the camshaft position sensor.

Sorry for the late reply guys! I'm still trying to get the hang of this site!

And my friend took it to autozone and they said it didn't have any problems. And sorry when i wrote the post i didnt give as much detail.

But no smell, and no noise.

I put in a new transmission, So i dont think it could be that.

Whenever I try to start it, nothing happens. I try it again and everything is okay, it turns on. Everyonce in a while whenever i put reverse it turns off.

And yes the dealer is charging me 105 to scan it, but there's a mechanic near by that could scan for 40.00 going monday morning.

AND!

thanks for your help guys!

X2, Bingo
Sounds like the familiar problem of the camshaft positioning sensor.

Is your car a manual or automatic?

Actually, our cats don't smell when they die. Those were the old style cats of yesteryears. Our cats just rattle and clog up from the debris.

Sounds like whoever put in your transmission may have not hooked up the transmission harness up properly. Perhaps there is a connection loose? I assume it is an Automatic?
I would have them check the transmission harness for any loose connections or shorts.

If that isn't it then it could be the ignition switch. Or the cam positioning sensor.

How long ago did you have the transmission rebuilt or replaced?
Did they dealer do the work? Did they replace the transmission harness?

No the dealership didnt put the tansmission, It was a near by mechanic that did it,
I'd say last march.

My car is an Automatic.

And i'm not sure about the harness. I have to go tomorrow to get it checked out.

How much would it be to replace all that stuff.?

I am not sure what it would be to change out the transmission harness. Perhaps it is just a loose connection. Does this mechanic that installed the transmission have any knowledge of VW's? If it's not your transmission wiring it still could be your Cam positioning sensor or the iginition switch. Both are known to go out on the older Beetle's.
Since you got the transmission changed in March of last year I would think that a problem with the hook up would have manifested itself before now.

I would have the car scanned via a Vag Com. That should bring up some codes even if you don't have a check engine light on.
That might shed some light into your situation before you spend money on parts that you don't need.

Here is a link to Partsgeek. They have some resonable prices on the Cam positioning sensors:

00 2000 Volkswagen Beetle Camshaft Position Sensor - Engine Mechanical - Beck Arnley, Bosch, Standard Motor Products - PartsGeek

Actually it also could be the crankshaft positioning sensor:

00 2000 Volkswagen Beetle Crank Position Sensor - Engine Mechanical - Beck Arnley - PartsGeek

Or the ignition switch:

00 2000 Volkswagen Beetle Ignition Switch - Steering - Beck Arnley, OE Aftermarket, Standard Motor Products, Vemo - PartsGeek
