STEP 4:
- The bottom plate will now release.
- Once the switch is exposed, lift up on the switch from the rear harness portion. This will allow you to disconnect the harness from the switch.
- Slide the switch forward.
Thanks pal.. If you only posted that up about 2 weeks earlier
I was taking out the panel under the steering column, and you have to take out the switch holder there to get the panel out. I took the back two screws out and fought with it a bit before I went and got the manual to find out there were two more screws hiding behind those derned caps.
This is the first place that I go to when I want to begin troubleshooting. After searching for this topic, I noticed that there were no walk-throughs. Simply, just a small something I could do to give back to the ORG!

I give thee +3 bonus points for looking in the manual.
You guys are the best! whenever I have a problem with my Bug I look it up on this site, print it up and voila! my husband can fix it. Awesome!!! keep up the good work.
hmmmmm well I replaced my hazard relay because the turn signals were flashing (and clicking) rapidly but none of the bulbs are out. Also when I turned the hazard lights on they flashed at the normal rate. Yet after replacing the relay the turn signals stillll are flashing viciously, I'm wondering if it's a fuse now or maybe there is a bad connection to one of the turn signals eventhough they all work. Well idk but if anybody has any ideas, all will be welcome just pm me because I lose track of threads, thanks!
Mine started out as just the turn signals. Try this, turn your indicator on and try to listen closely to the area that your emergency button is located. If it's louder than normal or if it buzzes at all I would replace it. First check all your bulbs to make sure
I'm bumping this so I can find it again when my hazard switch comes in. I had this problem today (still intermittent... it started working again just as I pulled into a car parts store, thinking it might be a fuse.) I ordered the switch from ECS tuning, so it will probably be here in moments! They're so fast!
Thanks for posting this. I bought my Beetle at a Ford dealership and they usually have no clue about what to do when I take it there to be fixed (I have a Ford warranty ). I bought the part, showed them your how-to and they were able to install it for me!
1. Photos show configuration for '98-'03 models--switch is different and in different location on '04-up models.
2. Photos show car without heated seats. If car has heated seats, pulling off the outer front panels is complicated by fact the heated seat switches are attached to wiring harness.
3. Bentley manual states that the switch can be simply removed outward without need to remove the panel at all. (See illustration.) Would need to pull off the blank and/or press adjacent switch to on and then pry switch out from the side according to the manual. I'd recommend caution using this method.
Thank you for this entire thread and the illustration from Bentley. I was able to fix this problem myself for about $35 and 3 minutes of my time. Probably saving hundreds of dollars (and wasted time) at the service department. THANK YOU.
