A blow-off valve (BOV) vents air into the atmosphere. Diverter Valves (DV) vents the excess air back into the air intake. The computer wants to see that air recirculate into the flow. If it doesn't, then it thinks the car is running rich/broken and it throws a CEL. This doesn't happen all the time, but it happens more often than not.
If you want sound, then remove your airbox and install a K&N cone filter/short ram and you'll hear all the wooshing you want.
