Default Will a 2003 New Beetle 2.0l auto trans work in a 1998 new beetle 2.0l auto?

I need to know if the 2003 transmission can be swapped into the 98. The transmission code in the 98 is FDF. I'm not sure on the code from the 03 but I can find out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The FDF is the code for the gear ratios inside the tranny. Main thing is to make sure the tranny type is the same, example O1M (4speed), O9G (6speed), or O2E (6speed direct shift).

FDF is from an O1M transmission. Main difference from other autos is the gear ratios.
1st - 2.714 (same)
2nd - 1.551 (above the avg 1.441)
3rd - 1.000 (same)
4th - 0.679 (below the avg 0.742)
Rev - 2.111(below the avg 2.884)

Inrermediate input gear - 61 teeth (avg 45)
Output gear - 63 teeth (avg 44)
ratio - 1.033 (avg 0.978)

Final drive pinion shaft - 16 teeth
Ring gear - 78 teeth
Ratio - 4.875

ok... Now since I don't have the transmission here with me, can I find out which transmisson was in the 03 by the VIN#? and if the 03 is also an 01m, then the swap will work, correct?

The 03's also used the O1M transmissions (4speed).

I copied the auto transmission data to a XLS sheet. Since XLS files are not allowed I named it with a .pdf extension. Just remove .pdf once you save the file. Hopes this helps you and others with auto tranny code questions (98-06).
