Default limp mode?

Hi all. New to this forum, and new beetles as well.

I just bought a 1999 beetle. 2.0/auto.
The car is apparently in third gear. No down shifting or up shifting.
I checked the fluid level by taking the 5mm allenhead plug out of the bottom of the trans, and some fluid came out. I was wondering what other possible causes might be, and was hoping for an easy fix. There are no dealerships close, so no way to scan for codes.
Will it hurt to drive it this way for about 50 miles to get it to a dealer?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Dan

Is there an AutoZone near you? Go there & have them scan your car then come back with the codes. you're probably in limp mode, not much pick up after 3000 rpms. Safe to drive, just not much fun. Do you have a CEL (check engine light)?

Limp mode is a 1.8T safe guard which keeps the boost from hurting an ailing engine. Being stuck in gear is a transmission problem and sounds to me like the end of the line. I fear the worst in your case.
