Default Auto trany shifter going out of Drive "D" into "N"

Hello,
My wife has a 99 Beetle with the 2.0L engine/Auto Trany. While she is driving, the car will go out of "D" and into "N" randomly and the red shifter light and the dash indicator will shift from D to N. I think it might be something with the shifter because if I put pressure to keep it in drive it will not shift out of "D". Is there a way that I can adjust the shifter or is there some kind of part that needs to be replaced. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like the cable/shifter needs to be adjusted.
