Default My Car has it's transmission appointment tomorrow!!!

So tomorrow at 10 am-ish, Bobby has an appointment with a local auto shop, Chicago Automotive, to get his fluid changed as well as his filter for my 4-speed automatic.
A great THANK YOU To DLZBUG for sending me the fluid/filter/gasket!!!! And all your expertise.

My 03 turbo 4-speed automatic somehow lost a bolt in the transmission pan almost 5 months ago, and he lost, I would think it's safe to say, about a quart of ATF... and I haven't had the means or money to get it fixed until now!!!

I would like to include a detailed instruction page to also give to my mechanic along with the fluid/filter. I have seen many step by step pages/links with this information.

Does anyone recommend one page or another that would be best to give to a mechanic?? I just want him to know which parts are important the most, and maybe just some pointers???

I'm going to be printing it out at work today to have to give him tomorrow. Wish me luck. I'm very nervous. One guy here in town told me that he's never heard of anyone in town doing an automatic transmission for a NB right in this town. But I'm very confidant in this mechanic here. He seems very honest and open.

Also, anyone have any advice on how I should handle the situation if anything does go wrong??? If the repair ends up being messed up or he doesn't repair it right? What should I look for after picking him up?? Which questions should I ask, or which instructions should I leave with him? How long should I anticipate before I would notice a problem if he did do anything wrong? What are my options or rights as a customer???

The most important thing is that he has a scan tool that will allow him to read the transmission temperature in order to know when to pull the plug on the standpipe to get the level correct.

Link 1: http://pics.tdiclub.com/members/driv...0Procedure.pdf

Link 2: "How-To" Change Auto Transmission Fluid

Note that link #1 states that 4.5 liters of fluid were required, I'm not sure where that came from but 3 liters is a more realistic number.

Good luck! Glad I could help.

What should I expect if something does go wrong?
Will it all be at my risk or does he hold any liability?

Depends on the shop. If he is a competent mechanic there should be no issue. If there were to be an issue, it all depends on the mechanic. Some stand behind their work, others dont.

Would it be best to ask him? I dont really want to make him mad and/or insult him. I've just heard scary things from this issue and basically I just want to have this 5 month endeavor over with.

Dropped Bobby off 3 hours ago. I'm sitting at work. My roommate is going to call me when he's done. Im so nervous. I hope everything goes well. I dont care the cost. I want my bobby home in one piece. I'm craving to drive my volkswagen.
Do they put crack underneath the driver's seats? I think that explains the crayon smell...

DLZBUG, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Chicago Automotive here in town, charges me 70$ to do my transmission. I paid for the filter and fluid. He can do anything I need on my beetle. I'm very satisfied. We'll see how things go the next few weeks to be sure.

I'm so happy, and seriously, I wouldn't have been able to do this the right way had it not been for everyone that helped me here at the .org for the last few months!

Again, thank you to all for the help you offered.
Bobby thanks you.

Good deal. Did the mechanic like the instructions? That was a good price for the work done. A guy I know locally wanted $100 to do it...with me helping.

Glad to hear Bobby is well and made it through his procedure just fine.

I would recommend this guy to anyone. He seems to definitely know his stuff.
You can tell he used Marvins Dad's instructions, he laughed a little when I dropped them off with the fluid and stuff, but I can tell he used em cause he stapled the packed and returned it covered in grease

Im so happy right now.
Thanks again

Bobby's Been Doing Great since I got his transmission serviced, thanks again DLZBUG

Just another question:

I did reset my transmission, but it seems to shift later then it used to.. it's not as fast.. if that makes sense??

I almost want to switch it back to the way it used to shift a bit shorter, is there any way to do this?? Un-DO the automatic reset to factory settings????

I believe you reset to factory specs. If I remember right, the tranny will "learn" your driving habits and adjust itself accordingly.

It still seems to shift later then when I first bought the car and up until I reset the factory setting. I want to kind of go back to how it use to.. it would shift a little sooner at a lower rpm.... Anyways I can do this? Should I be driving it a certain way??

It's shiftin anywhere between 2.5 and the 4 mark on my RPM meter.. most usually between 3-4... is that bad?

Default Automatic Trany problems on a 01 Beetle

Hey all, I was reading the forums on the Beetle transmission problems and I was hoping someone could lend me advice. I just recently bought my daughter a 2001 VW Beetle. I repair salvaged cars, so this one had front end damage. After I fixed the care I was driving it one day and it would not shift out of first gear. I would let of the gas and it would be like you put it in neutral. I would have to come to a complete stop and pull out again. It would take off great but it still would not come out of first. I towed it to the dealer to have the transmission serviced. ($255.00 my cost)It worked great for about 2 days then did it again. I turned the car off and on and tried driving it several times. After about the fourth time it stared shifting. That has been 3 days ago and it has done it several times in between. Does any body have any idea what it might be? Could it be the TCU?

Default Chicago Automotive?

You seem to have had a wonderful experience with Chicago Automotive, would you mind sharing their location/phone, so that others here in Chicagoland may also enjoy their fine service?

Happy to hear all is well!
