Default 1.8L turbo GL auto trans.

My 2003 Turbo GL has 103,000 miles on it and is exhibiting some potential transmission problems. It takes several seconds, especially when shifting to reverse, for the transmission to engage. I would like to keep this car for another 100,000 miles. What is involved in a full auto-trans service? I keep hearing it is a "sealed unit". However there is a drain plug, which means to me that the fluid can be replaced. Is there anything else (filter, gasket etc.) in a complete transmission service? Would just a fluid change cure the "delayed trans engagement" syndrome?
If this has been covered in another thread, I apologize. I have not been able to find it.
Thanks so much.
Mike

You can do a fluid flush, but its not uncommon for the VW auto transmissions to die around 100k.

I would do a flush and see if it helps. If not, you could be looking at a new trans. Pretty common to do a 5-speed swap, as its cheaper than an auto and lasts far longer and is easier to maintain.

I'd take up on cheat's offer Mike,he's got the skeelz...I think it may be time for a flush n' fill + filter...

A sloppy auto at 100k isn't unheard of,if it doesn't come around,a 5speed swap is the way to go,bud

Thanks for the replies. I sent a PM to The Cheat. We are practically neighbors. I am definitely not averse to swapping out for a 5 speed if it comes down to that.
