Default Newbie ? 98 Beetle auto tranny

I just bought a 98 beetle with a 2.0 & auto tranny. I do alot of city driving and I was wondering what gear are you supposed to be driving in D or 3?

D is fine for normal driving.

3 is for times when for instance ascending a steep, long incline or when towing a heavy load where the car might hunt between 3rd and 4th gears, 3 will hold it in 3rd (but select 2nd or 1st if needed).
