1st gear griding.

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I just got a 1999 beetle 5 speed gls but sometimes i have a problem with 1st gear. Sometimes when i shift in first gear i feel a griding noise and some other times it wont shift easy in first gear. The other 2/3/4/5 and reverse are just fine. Any suggestion it will be highly appreciated.

Are you making sure the clutch is to the floor when going into 1st?

Yes the clutch is to the floor.

I'd start with adjusting the shift linkage. Mine was getting notchy and first was being a pain. Then a plastic piece of my shift linkage broke. I would definitely take a look at the linkage first.

My fiance had a '95 Passat that you had to throw into second in order to get it into first. His shift linkage went and after he fixed it and got it adjusted, it shifted like butter. All his other gears were fine before that too.
